More homes, better transit, safer walking, higher QOL
REP. WAXMAN:

In other words, you found that your view of the world, your ideology, was not right, it was not working?

ALAN GREENSPAN:

... I was shocked, because I had been going for 40 years or more with very considerable evidence that it was working exceptionally well.

Growing youth unemployment numbers "reveal more about the failure of employment policy than about any failure of character."

The Youth Crisis Is Really About the Rise of the NEETs
The rising unemployment rate among US workers aged 16 to 24 — it hit 10.5% in August, its highest level in a decade not counting the pandemic years — has added to the worry about the crisis of “discon...

Exactly. Build lots of market rate housing and give $ to people with the bottom 25% of income so they can afford it.
I'm increasingly coming to the conclusion that giving low income and homeless people money to the tunes of thousands of dollars a month, unconditionally, would be more effective than building subsidized housing right now. The tremendous now $1.5 mil. per unit construction costs just doesn't scale.

In Maryland, shout out to Marc Elrich and MACo.
Shout out to the California local elected officials who banned the construction of new housing for decades, causing the state's population to stagnate while places like Texas grew by 1-2% every year since the 1990s.
Texas is a majority-minority state, yet Republicans drew maps that make white votes carry 2-3 times more political power than Black or Hispanic votes.

That’s what gerrymandering does: it cracks and packs communities of color so their growing numbers translate into less representation.

Thank-you, @kedseconomist.com for the clearest explanation I've seen of why our current half-employer-based, half government provided health insurance system in unsustainable.

@justupthepike.bsky.social -- curious what you think about this take.
As a fully occupied, 400,000-sq. ft. office building, it would’ve likely had over 2,000 people working there. I don’t feel good about these conversions, I think they are part of a process that is sapping vitality from cities.
It’s really happening:

135 E.57th St is a large office building that’s been mostly vacant since the pandemic.

And now it is going to be converted to housing—350 units, including affordable.

4+ million sq. ft. of conversions are now underway in Manhattan. Let’s keep this going.

Let’s talk about driver solidarity: whenever there’s a news piece or social media post about a driver clearly at fault for hitting a pedestrian or cyclist, other drivers flood the comments to justify the driver’s actions and victim blame the person who’s been hit. Like clockwork. Why is the case?

Took me a while to realize he is describing UK and not USA.
This bit is correct and especially helpful in understanding How It Came To This: 1) politicians and media will never accept the left holding meaningful power 2) if there’s any prospect of that happening, they will unite to destroy it by any means necessary 3) they are all fine with the far right.

Did you know transit is 20 times safer than driving a car? Each year, public transportation prevents more than 2,500 injuries related to car accidents. Take Metro!
