Tried actually using Second Life Android app on my 2019 phone, and if I try going somewhere other than my house then the framerate gets bad enough that, combined with the imprecise touch screen controls, it ends up as something that's too frustrating to use.

Wrote about me playing with OpenSimulator, to try to put some more stuff on my blog: blog.novasquirrel.com/blog/trying-...

I'd like to try and use my blog and wiki more. I like to write a bunch about stuff I'm passionate about and my blog can be a good place for that.

The strategy I've been using to try to get a clean furry roleplay group going is to make it look approachable and fun to new people, but that seems like a very slow way to find people since no one can recommend any communities to contact, so I just have to hope people stumble onto my group.

Here's a bunch of toy art I got from @funnyhat12.bsky.social and @raystarkitty.bsky.social that I haven't posted here yet! Thought it'd be cute to get some art involving cute bappy paws, and RayStarKitty's style is perfect for Maffi. Love the idea to have colored heart prints on paws.

Tried moving my OpenSimulator server to the VPS I got for hosting Forgejo since I had a lot of resources left, and that alone was enough to fix the issues I had with being unable to visit from other servers, so I guess the issues I previously had were weak hardware and timing out because of it.

Continuing to be glad I stopped worrying about DMG compatibility on the Petal Crash GBC port because it's a game that genuinely does need the Game Boy Color, mostly for the expanded video RAM (though having colors in a color matching video game is certainly a bonus.)

Maybe I should try to go to ANE next year and try harder to find someone I actually know who would want to room with me hehe

Tried setting up Forgejo on my VPS, and it turned out to use 16.5% of the RAM, more than anything else I'm hosting and probably too much for something where I don't think I'm getting enough of a benefit from hosting it myself. But it was very easy to set up, so maybe on my home server eventually.

Seems like I can do a much better job at context switching between projects if I keep a TODO list that goes into detail on exactly what I'm doing right now, being much more specific about individual pieces than I would on an issue tracker. I already do these for things that last multiple days.

Tried another forum, and I think it's reaffirming that the places I try to meet people in need to either be related to the kind of stuff I want to find, or be big enough that everyone's on there. I'd like to avoid having to rely solely on social media to meet people but don't know what else I can do

In yesterday's Tilemap Town Tuesday I showed of the new feature in tilemap.town where you can create a doodle board to draw on, and people drew a bunch of stuff. We ended up making a little art gallery attached to the library to hold some pictures people made.

Managed to make a Tilemap Town client as a desktop app with Qt, using code from the 3DS client as a base. It's very basic but you can explore and chat. I'd like to eventually add the ability to build and other important features but it's a proof-of-concept for now

blog.novasquirrel.com/tilemap-town... In December 2025, Tilemap Town got custom name colors, doodle boards, projectile shooters, UI improvements on phones, the ability to send someone a URL to show them a map, and more. The protocol documentation was also improved for clarity.

Announcing v0.2.0 of my homebrew SNES audio driver.

This release stabilises the 2 breaking changes I made to the audio driver months ago (in the beta releases). It also fixes a lot of small bugs and items I had on my ever growing todo list.

I tried playing with porting the Tilemap Town 3DS client to PC with Qt to help me investigate why the 3DS client crashes, and at this point I think I'm convinced that my code was actually fine, and the problem was the official software keyboard I was calling or the circumstances I used it in.

Spent some time recently revising Tilemap Town's protocol documentation for clarity: raw.githubusercontent.com/NovaSquirrel...

I'm realizing it's very rare for a virtual world to even publish that information - Second Life does, and some games/platforms have been reverse engineered.

Since Tilemap Town is an open platform that invites people to make clients for it, I feel like I want to keep the protocol small but flexible so it's easy to implement. But I'm realizing that that doesn't stop me from putting in lots of cool or fun server-side behavior for people to play with.

I added chat name colors to #TilemapTown recently to try and help make it easier to follow chat that's busy and that has a lot of people in it. And it's just a fun, easy-to-implement bit of customization anyway. Earlier I added a feature to focus on chat from nearby people for similar purposes.

I say this with zero irony: if you are even tangentially a part of a retro video game community, it is your civic duty to push back against this company and shun anyone who doesn't. This is fascism tapping gently at the door and as soon as you let it in, it's going to invite its friends.

I've checked out at least 15 forums to see if they're a good way to make friends, and I think I'm finding that small, quiet communities need to be related to the stuff you're trying to make friends over, otherwise the chances you'll find the kind of stuff you're looking for isn't too good.
