The 8yos are currently into 'The Who Was Show,’ narrated by H. Jon Benjamin, & on a couple occasion I worried they’d discovered 'Archer.'

"Uh, boys... has that show taught you about anyone named H.R. Haldeman? Wernher Von Braun? Anything called the 'Church Commission?' No? Okay, just checking."

My phone just tried to autocorrect the use of ‘clanker’ in an sms and I should to replace my Rick_Dalton_Points_At_Screen.gif with one of Ghetto Pat from ‘One Battle After Another’ because we should all aspire to have his healthier, antagonistic, relationship with the telephone.

Man, ‘The Paper’ is probably going to be pretty mid but that quote in the first episode about “the industry… collapsing like an old smoker's lung” really takes me back to my decision to give up on j-school and go into insurance following 9/11 and the launch of Google News.

Automotive product development has a long lead time, which explains them being a little late to the party, but I think it’s great that Toyota will soon sell you a full size version of the family car from ‘Bluey’

Somehow demolishing the colonnade connected to the White House proper seems even worse? Folks might want to argue the East Wing isn’t ’that historic’ because it was ‘only’ constructed in the 40s, but the colonnades were there even before the Canadians burned the place down in the War of 1812.

Man it’s gonna be hell getting used to saying ‘that moon’ rather than ‘the moon’ for the next 60 years or so.

I’m not saying heavy metal poisoning is an issue in the products approved for sale in Australia, but I am saying that of my colleagues the same ones who champion using Copilot to write their SQL are also the same ones that talk a lot about their protein and preworkout powder regimens.

I just introduced one of my coworkers to William Gibson’s concept of The Jackpot and then remembered I’m the office’s mental health first aid person, so whoops.

The Fantastic Four movie is set in the present day, not the 1960s, but has old cars & fashions because the United States has been forcibly isolated from the international community with a kind of reverse Cuban Embargo for the previous 65 years.

Honestly that sounds like a better idea every day.

In the Fantastic 4 movie American society has not progressed beyond the 1960s but every cut to a foreign location shows that it’s clearly 2025 everywhere else in the world.

If you’re an IVF clinic or other private medical facility and you can’t secure your patient records, there should be severe financial consequences, not just an apology. Being forced to sign significant amounts of stock over to the affected patients or something like that.

Some days you have that moment when you suddenly realise a huge childhood influence is/was likely what we now recognise as autistic, given their affect and/or what turn out to have been their special interests.

Today it was Dan Ackroyd.

Charlie Kirk was a man so deeply committed to freedom of speech and enlightened, reasonable debate that you are not allowed to quote anything he said ever again.

Old Soviet joke: a man picks up a newspaper. It has a shocking headline - an obituary on the front page! "He is in my prayers," the man tells the newspaper vendor. The man is crying. The vendor weeps loudly, "This must never be the answer, tovarich."

So I started watching the new Mission Impossible film and the film’s impossible mission is ignoring that Tom Cruise is as old in this film as Paul Newman was in The Colour of Money.

@wtyppod.bsky.social you folks wanna do an episode on the O-Bahn? It hits so many themes for y’all:
- Dismantling a tram system
- A single-route guided busway w/ poor traffic interface
- poor end-of-life planning
- fleet changes damaging the busway
- an 80’s Chuck & Di connection
- minimal deaths!

Watched the first 2 episodes of a mesmerising French series called ‘The Collapse’. But even me, someone who rewatches ‘Children of Men’ too often for my own good, am unsure I can keep watching this, knowing that the 6th episode, 50 days in, is called ‘The Care Home’:

Oh god my children have discovered the Emoji Movie, which is the kind of film the Academy doesn’t let Martin Scorsese hear about for fear he’ll decide that even making shadows with our hands against the cave walls was a mistake and he’ll start mailing packages to studio heads like Ted Kaczynski.

Jesus is there a bigger red flag than having your new departmental head introduce himself to the team as “a big fan of Jack Welch”?

I mean Ayn Rand, I guess.

Not the first time I’ve worked for someone who’s into Alec Baldwin cosplay, but usually the vibe comes via Glengarry Glen Ross & not 30Rock.

Played a round of TimeGuessr today and got jumpscared by a photo from this year of starving Palestinian kids scrambling toward food aid being parachuted into Gaza and it’s deeply fucked up that this was allowed into the dataset and they exposed users to it as a puzzle (I was off by about a block).

One of the more positive aspects of this place is that it encourages a reaction to posts of “that’s not even remotely for me but it’s pretty cool that its for them,” and recognising in yourself that it’s solidarity and empathy and not some kind of a Minnesota Nice response.
