Los Angeles League of Musicians (LALOM) released one of the best records I've heard in awhile. Reminds me of Orchestra Baobob in a way. It's a cumbia record to its core but that sells it short.

What they don’t tell you about “community organizing” is that a good chunk of it is getting coffee or beer with a bunch of different people to figure out how to make good things happen collaboratively between groups. Way more coffee and pastries than you might predict based on activism posters.

At the risk of being a curmudgeon, before you jump on your awesome organizing, community building idea, take a bit to find out what is already happening. Build on that, make it stronger & better, learn from those who've been at it for a long time. You don't get burnt out so fast.

One thing I think is important to remember is that organizing and community building means talking to people, often people who do not totally align with you.

Will take the people building community gardens over the political cults lecturing about organizing any day. Militancy doesn't just happen because people read the right pamphlet (tho pamphlets are great). People have to trust each other first. And trust is built through a mix of shared activities!

Something useful for any new community organizer to be aware of is that the community you organize is shaped by all the work you do, and the process by which people become aware of your organizing and join your community is a major part of it.

In order to be effective, you need to be intentional.
