Corruption + Coercion = Monarchism. Not every founder saw "corruption" as a problem. The more monarchical ones viewed self-interested governance as necessary to maintain a stable ruling class. They didn't publicly advertise those beliefs due to monarchism's great unpopularity with the citizenry.

I didn’t set out to study conspiracy culture. But once I realized where my research was leading, “The Storm Is Upon Us” was the first book I picked up. Having Mike with me at the launch of my own book is surreal. And I’m genuinely grateful.

Extra points for knowing that that window is called a "transom". (Throwing submissions "over the transom" was how spunky writers got their stuff in front of recalcitrant editors at publishing firms. And apparently it still is.)
Throwback to 2017, when they were trying to strip us of healthcare & we went with @indivisible.org to deliver letters from constituents to their senators: the door stayed locked, so I had my husband fly the letters through the transom. Just another day expecting public servants to serve the public.
