The depth of the shame of a country this wealthy and abundant allowing its people to go hungry is impossible to measure. The fact that a handful of people could fix this by paying their fair share of taxes while still remaining obscenely wealthy makes it even worse.

Discovered the breathtaking virtuosity and consummate skill of Daphne DuMaurier 13 years ago, when my then-girlfriend put the NYRB edition of her short horror fiction, DON'T LOOK NOW, in my hands; I followed that up with REBECCA, a book I think of every week.

I've read this story "Leg," by Brian Evenson, three times in the past couple days. It is seven short pages, and it is a work of radiant perfection, a sci-fi horror ambiguous fairytale with not a single word wasted, utterly original and self-contained. It's in this anthology, TINY NIGHTMARES.

Read Daniel Morton-Bentley's excellent letter of refusal, fully cited, from NYSED, to these fascists. Proud to be a New Yorker and submitting my TPA to NYSED and SUNY to become a New York-certified teacher this weekend.

Trump gave states 10 days to sign anti-DEI policy. NY Education Department is refusing.
In a Friday letter to the U.S. Education Department, New York officials said they will not certify that the state is eliminating DEI in schools, despite threats to pull federal funding.

That was with a warrant.

They're now going to use the Alien Enemies Act to raid us.

Gestapo - Nazi Germany

ICE - America

They all operate using the same rules with a madman at the helm.

Wildly excited that unbelievable truth, a sublime UK acoustic indie rock trio whose debut almost here (1998) was a definitive album of my late adolescence, is back after 25 years with a terrific EP, sounding just like themselves, and also timely and relevant.

Sad to hear of the passing of L. J. Smith (best known for The Vampire Diaries). I was too cool for YA as a kid/teen/young adult, but fortunately I've made up for it later in life. I have been reading Smith's The Forbidden Game trilogy aloud to my girlfriend, who loves her, and it has been a blast.

First time in Forest Service history chief wasn’t a career employee.

This thug is about to sell off our public lands to create Trump's sovereign wealth fund.

Got this trilogy for my girlfriend for Christmas in their original incredible 1994 paperback editions. She loved them as an early teen. Finished reading Volume 1: The Hunter aloud to each other yesterday and it was so much better than I expected. Labyrinth meets cosmic horror meets repressed memory.
