“Content” might be the most damaging linguistic development this century. When art becomes a commodity, why can’t some slop bucket replicate it?

(I think people are going to learn hard lessons that it’s not a commodity, and even “low brow” stuff takes tremendous skill to execute well. But too late)

Politics—intentional attention to the way we structure our shared lives—is essential Christian spirituality.

Partisanship—blind and absolute support of one’s chosen tribe—is antithetical to Christian spirituality.

Sometimes the exegetical work on a passage does not back up the sermon you wanted to preach on it. Sometimes it even contradicts what you wanted to say.

One of the most important tasks of a preacher‚ and one we don't talk about enough, is admitting this.

I love this. It’s so true:

“Life is an intrinsically exuberant, superabundant business, and to respond to it in a calculating spirit is an offence against nature.”

Something Jesus never said: “violence is ok so long as you’re scared.”

You can justify fearful violence, or you can follow Jesus. You can’t do both.

And Joseph came with Mary, great with child, to Ann Arbor. But the Townies turned them away toward Ypsilanti, saying, "The city is full; it is not meet that every man should afford to dwell among us." And they were cast out, for there was no room for the poor in their sight. #a2council

Fleming Rutledge writes, “of all the seasons of the church year, Advent most closely mirrors the daily lives of Christians.” I think this is true: Advent is unflinchingly honest about the real disappointment and pain of this world, and it holds tenaciously to the hope of the world made well.
