This barren area of the #Syrian desert was home to an informal settlement of up to 50,000 displaced people at its peak. The #Rukban (‘berm’) camp was never recognized by the #UNHCR and received minimal assistance. It's hard to imagine how people survived there for so many years.

Anyone wanting to know about the Syrian revolution (NOT Western media's, including or perhaps especially "alternative" media's, revised version of it) should read the whole thread.
The Syrian revolution started off as a bottom-up, working class uprising from the peripheries organised through local coordination committees. They set up local councils throughout the liberated areas that coordinated to provide services in the absence of a state. 🧵

Despite rumors that the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (#SARC) will help return displaced #Syrians, they are nowhere to be seen on the ground in #Rukban, nor have residents been contacted by them. As usual, the people of Rukban are alone while any #UN agencies are embarrassingly absent.
