This is a wonderful accolade for @louisehk.bsky.social The North light is an absolutely, delightful read.
The Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture just awarded me the Lindsley and Masao Miyoshi Prize for my translation of The North Light by Hideo Yokoyama. Thrilled that this rich and beautiful novel may now get the attention it deserves. Looking for a US publisher to buy the North American rights.

We have an updated ministerial code! The new code makes clear that ministers "are expected" to pay back any severance payment if they quickly get a new ministerial job or are found to have broken the rules on post-government jobs

Lillian Bilocca born on 26 May 1929. Following the Hull triple trawler tragedy in '68, she campaigned for better safety on board trawlers. The outcome was one of the most successful civil actions of the 20th century, as Harold Wilson's Government agreed to all their demands. Happy Birthday, Big Lil.

Glad I attended the APPG on Science and Technology in Agriculture session last night. Wayne McNee, CEO of AgriZeroNZ, presented New Zealand’s approach to tackling agricultural emissions through a national public–private partnership. Some interesting takeaways for Shake Climate Change and beyond.

Your regular reminder from @privateeyenews.bsky.social of the many qualities of the ex-PM. 🤔😉
It’s 19 years since David Cameron described Ukip supporters as “fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists”. In the run-up to yesterday’s elections, candidates for Reform UK, Ukip’s successor party, seemed to be doing their best to live up to that description in one way or another…

Good point from @mcuban.bsky.social 👇
There are 33m companies in the USA. Only 21k employe 500 or more. And they only make up 23% of workers.

Trump and Elon are ignoring the more than 32m entrepreneurs that can't afford to build a new factory or pay tariffs or absorb cancelled contracts.

Yet more evidence that party funding rules desperately need reform.

British politics is painfully open to capture by wealthy vested interests.

And to the oil magnates, tech-bros and right-wing ideologues emboldened by Trump, the sums needed to capture UK parties are not even loose change.
Kemi Badenoch ditched the Tories’ commitment to reaching Net Zero by 2050 after accepting donations from funders of the Global Warming Policy Foundation and Net Zero Watch, both of which have campaigned for the target to be scrapped.
