AK's Education Department is a "hands-off landlord." The agency owns nearly half of about 120 rural schools statewide. Inside, I've found failing fire alarms, faulty foundations, toxic leaks & raw sewage. Now the state wants rural districts to own those buildings. www.propublica.org/article/alas...
Alaska Owns Dozens of Deteriorating Schools. Now It Wants Under-Resourced Districts to Take Them On.
Rural school district superintendents are trying to “find the best, most optimal use of very lean resources.” Taking on the state’s unmaintained buildings, they say, will only increase their burden.

It's not just a matter of food pantries not having the supplies or volunteers. SNAP supports so many people directly and indirectly, there simply is no substitute.
As thousands of Alaskans face the prospect of losing federal food aid this weekend amid the government shutdown, food pantries say there’s no way they can cover the gap if benefits run out.

I often see suggestions that it is "the Church's" job to feed, clothe, and shelter our neighbors. While not wrong, it's problematic in part because I don't see those same people overwhelming their churches with donations for food, clothing, and shelter.
