Here's what Republicans think is "unrealistic"

1) Need a judicial warrant to enter private property
2) Require verification that someone is not a US citizen before sending them to immigration detention
3) No masks
4) No secret police: Officers must have ID
5) Keep enforcement away from
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Thursday that demands made by Democrats for new restrictions on federal immigration officers are “unrealistic” and warned that the Department of Homeland Security will shut down next week if they do not work with Republicans and the White House.

This is an incredible thread. “We lost the women” and their entire oeuvre is weighed against “we lost one guy, however foundational.”

It’s like this is so many spaces.
This is only related in a sideways manner, but: the story of any small slice of humanity is the story of humanity, just boiled down and distilled. So:

In 2020, we had a lot of conversations about harassment at SF/F conventions, and Isaac Asimov came up several times.
the Epstein files are really devastating because they remind me of how many girls and women miss out on professional opportunities, mentorship and careers because of how many powerful, rich and influential men only view girls and women — and interactions with them — through the lens of sex

Everything’s going to shit because Vance and Thiel are ineligible for the Christmas Adventurers.
Think of the most outrageous conspiracy-based plots from all those movies from Three Days of the Condor to Taken, and it looks like they pretty much describe the real world of many elites.
From the Epstein files: were Paul Volker and Tom Brokaw really members of a secret society with a "no minorities or women allowed" rule? Brokaw is still around -- worth asking him!

Police unions are protection cartels employed against civilian oversight, irrespective of the conduct or beliefs of individual members.
Any Seattle cop who refuses to defend the people of Seattle against violent federal shock troops should be fired immediately. Full stop.

Start with Mike Solan, the head of the rogue police union.

I cannot tell you how much doubt was consistently directed at the Gaza Health Ministry’s casualty numbers and how much pressure was put on news organizations to couch those numbers as unreliable.

Biden himself said they were fabricated!

Jan 6, 2021. Activating his non-state followers to attempt an auto-coup. My wife made an excellent analogy that Trump’s entire tenure in national politics has been posting road signs, “13 miles to Fascism. 10 miles…” 1/6 was when it fully arrived. Everything since has been just horrible.
Everybody post your “Yes, It’s Fascism” date
Every one of the factors that now convince him Trump is fascist was present in the first term (even if unsuccessful). Lots of folks who accurately described Trump as fascist were called unserious. I'ed much rather someone admit why they were wrong (left-punching, bias, etc.) than this. Gift link

International law no longer serves as an instrument of global stability—and the U.S. should use this moment to argue for a different approach to the rules of war, John Yoo argues.

The letter from Bill and Hillary Clinton to James Comer explaining their refusal to testify in his Epstein investigation is really remarkable, not like any letter of this genre I've seen. It's signed by them, not a lawyer, and the arguments are not legal ones. Reprinted from their X account:

Two stats I just saw (and double checked)
DHS says they're mobilizing 2000 ICE agents (not sure if this has been independently confirmed given their propensity to lie and exaggerate, but they've certainly sent hundreds)

Minneapolis has SIX HUNDRED COPS TOTAL
WHAT THE FUCK

No more Bivens actions. No, more bivens actions!
It would take a two-word amendment to 42 U.S.C. § 1983 to subject ICE agents and other federal law enforcement officers to the same liability for constitutional violations that local and state officers currently face.

If Congress actually cared about what it's seeing, it could pass that overnight.

The fact that Hegseth will receive the blanketest of pardons is one of the great dishonors of this decade.
The Pentagon is said to have used a plane that looked like a civilian aircraft in a boat strike. The law prohibits combatants from feigning civilian status to fool adversaries, then attacking and killing them. That is a war crime called “perfidy.”
U.S. Attacked Boat With Aircraft That Looked Like a Civilian Plane
Even accepting the Trump administration’s claim that there is an armed conflict with suspected drug runners, the laws of war bar “perfidy.”
