Great to work with our friends at @metoffice.gov.uk @climatecentreuk.bsky.social & @the-wildlifetrusts.bsky.social to spread the word about how climate change is impacting plant flowering times.
Huge thanks to everyone who took part in #NewYearPlantHunt & collected vital data!

"Plants are flowering at a time nobody would've expected." 💐

Climate change is likely why more than 600 species flowered at New Year, rather than the 20 to 30 observed decades ago. Louise Marsh from @bsbibotany.bsky.social speaking to BBC 5 live about #NewYearPlantHunt.

A little good news. But food plant Devil's-bit Scabious is one of those low-nitrogen adapted species that are now on the GB Vascular plant Red List as threat status 'Vulnerable' due to steep declines. Habitat loss, and too much nitrogen combined with poor habitat management -local extinctions.
Need a mid-week pick-me-up? Here's some positive nature news 📰

2025 was the year of the Marsh Fritillary, with numbers increasing in many places across the UK thanks to dedicated habitat management.

Also love the legend of Maelgwn Gwynedd described as "a bit like the story of King Canute but with extra furniture".

The Goldfinch is a beautiful little bird, almost verging on the exotic with its scarlet facemask, vibrant yellow wing feathers and chunky, parrot-like beak.
The collective noun for a group of Goldfinches is a 'charm' and it is certainly very apt.
What birds have you spotted this January?
