Was at some amazing events last week; the type you feel privileged are part of your job & you’d pay to be at/part of

The @royalsociety.bsky.social meeting on FND had many highlights but this Quinton Deeley talk on hypnosis & FND was thumping academic tour of neuroscience, philosophy & humanities👌

Merkel on her recurring leg tremor episodes from a few years ago: "It's really interesting, that the mind truly has no power over it. It is only human, but also an astonishing observation for me."

Nice review of the history of the peer review system

It’s increasingly clear to me this has to change - experts should be paid by journals to do this key task that adds rigour & value to scientific publications

Journals have exploited academics & universities to make massive profits for too long
History of the “peer review”: advisors, gatekeepers or neither?

“..the “referee system” did not exist before the nineteenth century and the term “peer review” was a creation of the late twentieth century.”

👇Great summary at end of a thread on really important research into iatrogenic harms to FND patients

I think we shouldn’t just aim to MITIGATE these very real harms - we urgently need to ELIMINATE them

The longer this continues the more are harmed

Would this be tolerated for any other disorder?!
Finally, we discuss some ways to mitigate these harms.
1)Diagnosis of inclusion
2) Normalising FND early in differential diagnosis
3) Improve Teaching
4) Parity for services and research
5) Working with patient led organisations 11/

This is the stuff we are here for 👇
Psychopathological & neuropathological constructs have distinct conceptual fields but they are not mutually exclusive categories. Clinical #neuropsychiatry is a practical discipline dedicated to study & clinical care of patients with psychopathological patterns who require a neurological workup
