Co-op groceries. Military history.
Looking around I’m often struck by how wildly successful the 9/11 attacks were. We continue to live in the era that they inaugurated, their consequences enshroud us even now.

We’re supposed to absorb obviously fictitious images like this as something approaching real, while also accepting as self-evident that they do not manifest in any logic of real gun violence.
As I do understand the reality of gun violence, I have long despised Rep @realannapaulina and consider her to be someone who makes America less safe. Listening to her comments today blaming Democrats for the shooting just confirms how awful she is. Anna, perhaps photos like this were a bad idea.

Like the assassinations in Minnesota, for example. It’s already on, just hard to tell how advanced it is. Our perception, as usual, is lagging behind the material reality.
i do wonder at what point this ratcheting of rhetoric about the democratic party ends up having real life effects

What a groundbreaking perspective. No one has thought of that before. We could call it something like “air superiority”. Just spitballing here.

Yep. It’s fun reading the British historians who without all the baggage wrote a lot about the war and had zero trouble answering this question in ways that feel almost harsh to the America reader.
“was Lee or Grant a better general” is a question with an obviously correct answer that a whole lot of people get wrong
People are often surprised to learn that Lee was an officer who never made it past colonel. The purported promotion to general was awarded by a treasonous cabal calling itself the "confederate states of america" which was put down by force by the Union army, which also had superior generals.

I suppose this is what seeking the Rogan of the left looks like: secretly paying a bunch of cynical influencers to be silent about a genocide.
Yo if you’re making a secret $100K a year to be silent about a genocide you’re not only not “independent” in any meaningful way, you’re also a piece of shit and should lose your audience.

The rule of law is a social construct and what many people have not understood yet is that the fascist will to power is a steamroller against“democratic norms” because they understand it’s just a construction and they are doing what they want because they are building new social reality around us.
Does the Privacy Act not exist anymore?

It is bewildering how many laws which governed basic public sector practices for decades are being ignored.

Respectful debate: The kind that happens in an ivory tower among powerful people who don’t have to concern themselves with the opinions or well-being of the peasants.

What they want is to be respected no matter what sort of inhumane nonsense they feel compelled to defend.
I will never understand how American elites managed to convince themselves that uncivil debate — not fascism, not impunity and not widespread indifference to facts — is the defining problem of our time.

This is an honestly garbage mess age in light of their campaign’s support for the genocide in Gaza. There’s no indication that we wouldn’t still be waking up to daily headlines about children being starved with our tax dollars. Walz should be ashamed to be repeating this “we would be at brunch” BS.
Walz says Harris "would have been a fantastic president... we wouldn't wake up every day to a bunch of shit on TV. We would wake up to an adult w/ compassion & dignity doing the work, not a manchild crying about whatever is wrong with him. May his fat ankles find something today. Petty as hell."

I hate to say it because it makes me cringe for a lot of reasons now, but the answer is probably Fight Club
What movie has had the most impact on your actual literal life? Not necessarily your favorite, but the one that’s most influenced or shaped something in your trajectory?

And then they’ll do it during elections when these same cities are outraged at being disenfranchised. This is gearing up for the sort of social upheaval they intend to provoke and then use as an excuse for an authoritarian crackdown.
Trump on DC: "We haven't had to bring in the regular military, which we're willing to do if we have to. And after we do this, we'll go to another location and we'll make it safe also ... Chicago is a mess. And we'll straighten that one out probably next"

Yes, focus on the hope and progress of the past while we rip them away from you in the present
White House official Lindsey Halligan: "While slavery is obviously a horrible aspect of our nation's history, you can't really talk about slavery honestly unless you also talk about hope and progress ... we need to stop focusing so much on the lack of progress."

I’m planning a solo tour of Gettysburg and Sharpsburg in the fall, and let me just say, Grant would have smoked Lee so fuckin hard in the Antietam campaign. No question.

In light of Trump’s announcement he’s taking control of DC, I’d like to repost my piece from @thebulwark.com on how autocrats hate their capital cities.

These places are often far more diverse and progressive than the leader’s vision of the nation.

Annihilation. A top 5 movie for me and it got pretty annihilated itself.
A quick question for anybody who wants to answer, just because I'm trying to get my creative juices flowing...

What's your favorite movie or movies that was a box office flop? I'm not talking about like "Man of Steel made $700 million rather than $1 billion," I'm talking about movies that bombed.

I would say the same for a Lord of the Rings recommend in fantasy. You’re probably better off looking for something that’s popular now and just let the deeper dives come later, if they ever do.
Over on Reddit someone is asking for science fiction for their precocious young reader and the people there are suggesting books that were old when that kid's grandparents were the same age as the kid, for fuck's sake if you didn't know any SF books from this millennium maybe sit this question out

They’re gambling that fascism is here to stay, and only going to become more entrenched. They want to position themselves to remain in some sort of accommodated power within that reality. It’s the rankest sort of obeying in advance.
I don’t know if Newsom, Shapiro and Rahm are idiots, but this is an idiotic strategy.
