Haha! It worked!

I scoped out the angle this morning and figured I’d be very lucky to pull it off, but it was surely worth a try, eh?

It you have a 1st or 2nd generation Google Nest in the UK you may have received an offer for a Tado X smart thermostat for 50% off to replace it. Don't bother, mine is going back. Rip off even at half price. I've seen Happy Meal toys with better design aesthetics and build quality.

The thread about the Empire Biscuit and its evolution into a distinctly Scottish staple
I usually write about Edinburgh and Leith local history, indeed that's probably how you came to be reading this, but regular listeners will probably know by now that I occasionally like to foray into the realms of quintessential Scottish cuisine. Today's topic is that teatime treat, the Empire Biscuit. You probably have a vague inkling of its origins as the German Biscuit, but shall we get a bit more specific? Yes. Let's have a thread about that.

The fact that so many people have the last name “Pope” suggests it was once a much more common profession. But with automation, it can now all be done by one guy.

10 days ago I took our prod database down by making a seemingly benign config change to start duplicating some writes to a new partitioned table. But the CPU shot to 100% and the server needed rebooting.

Just made the same change after fixing the engineering mistakes and so far all looks good 🤞

some ways to generate electricity

A) use sunlight to drive photosynthesis in plants, let plants die, wait ~100 million years, dig up fossilized plants, burn plants, use heat to boil water, use steam to drive a rotating turbine, use generator to make electrons

B) use sunlight to make electrons

10-minute notification reminder of a customer meeting while out walking the dog. I was only needed to answer a few technical questions that came up, so I sat in the local park and did the call on my phone. No distractions from stupid laptop or other work. I'm going to do more calls this way in 2025.
