It's working! Policies making it easier to build new homes in Rhode Island are starting to get results. After the state expanded residents’ right to build an accessory dwelling unit (ADU), the number of permits issued statewide jumped from 11 in 2021 to 163 in 2024.

This is why I think a key project for 2026 needs to be giving as big a megaphone as we can to the state & local Dems who can credibly promise meaningful action on lowering the cost of housing.

No offense to Congress (or, some offense, IDK) but state & local candidates can *actually* do shit here.
From the Yale Youth Poll - note how much more young people care about housing. It's issue #3 in importance for them! (And since housing is most people's biggest expense, "affordability" is really another way of talking about housing.)
