Ever wonder why it's so hard to get supposedly public information about government contracts? I describe one major concern - and a few things we can do about it - in a new post for the Law and Political Economy Project: lpeproject.org/blog/public-...
Public Money, Private Secrets: Rethinking FOIA in the Age of Public-Private Governance
As public-private partnerships become central to modern governance, FOIA’s Exemption 4 has evolved into a powerful tool for corporate secrecy. After Argus Leader, government agencies and private firms...

I would have said 0 but he gets one point for correctly identifying that he is on the side of the Empire.
this is a real video eric adams posted today.. not sure he remembers he's running for mayor or what at this point

Good thread. I was at a Chiefs of Police convention years ago and folks were already over the moon for this stuff. The trade floor was the wildest - vendors bragging about how fast they could violate people's privacy. "Collect first, develop suspicion later" is not good policy.
I spent the week at the police surveillance convention and let me tell you my biggest observation: The name of the game now is consolidating as much information as humanely possible from surveillance devices, the internet, other governmental data, and literally a million other places. 🧵

The suffix "-mancer" comes from manteía, the Greek word for divination. Likewise, "theurgy" means "divine working" and "thaumaturgy" means "marvel working." Thus, a D&D necromancer is more accurately called a "necroturge." In this essay I will...

Last night I had to ban someone from my (tiny) Discord community for the first time. Even though I knew it was the right thing to do, it was hard - I'm naturally conflict-adverse, plus I've done enough First Amendment work to be uncomfortable limiting speech based on my views of right and wrong.

I'm at the point that I can log on to Bluesky and identify today's Discourse in the first 5 posts.

Anyway, the problem is not the word "defund," it's that the people in power want the status quo (and police unions, don't get me started on police unions).

I'm listening in and I feel like @kendraserra.bsky.social is being quite kind to the DOJ by describing this as a "bloodbath."
I'm listening in on the Perkins Coie hearing in DDC. (I made it onto the call!) Judge Howell is just recapping where everything is at - 3 pending motions, she hasn't ruled on sections 2 and 4 previously, so she's going to focus on that.

Listening to the Perkins Coie motion hearing and the gov't lawyer is is trying very hard to say that the EO is subject to the rule of law but also that the rule of law means whatever the president feels like.

The students did a terrific job on the brief! We are grateful for your work on our behalf and proud of this submission to the Court.
I'm incredibly proud to have represented @innocenceproject.bsky.social, @georgetownprivacy.bsky.social, and my colleague and friend @1sadora.bsky.social on this brief. It's good to know that such great orgs and individuals are fighting against racially biased policing.
My students wrote an amazing amicus brief in a case on police use of fake accounts to target racial minorities. I can't thank them enough for all their work on this!

Thank you for inviting me to collaborate on the ideas and writing of the brief wit your great students!

For anyone curious about the arguments but short on time, their Harvard Cyber clinic blog post condensed our contributions to the Massachusetts court.

I grew up not far from Sackets Harbor, and I want to say how extraordinary it has been to see this unfold. NNY is largely apolitical (unless it affects Fort Drum). 1,000 turning out for a rally is a joyful surprise l - and it was effective.
