With today's 2035 emissions reduction target announcement, it is a good time to remind everyone that @climatecouncil.org.au has long argued that, in order for Australia to act in line with the Paris Agreement, we should be aiming for net zero by 2035. www.climatecouncil.org.au/resources/wh...

With a 2035 emissions reduction target of 62-70%, I think we can say Ketan called it.👇
Australia's going to release its 2035 target today....here's my prediction. Going off remarks, rumours and murmurings it might end up with a much lower actual target (in the low 60s), with an even more egregious aesthetic 'range' to make it sound more ambitious
PREDICTION

- Australia's 2035 target will be 65% by 2035

- It'll be presented with a range, "65% - 68%", to make it sound higher, despite that still being a 65% target

- the gov't won't exclude dodgy, constantly revised land use data

- no exit plans for coal and gas export

Massive Free Palestine rally in Naarm today - the front was already at Flinders Street before the union contingent had even left State Library. Proud to join and march with NTEU comrades for an end to the two-way arms trade, genocide, ethnic cleansing and occupation. ✊🇵🇸

It was an incredible privilege to join over 3,300 peers last week at the largest ever International Political Science Association (IPSA) World Congress in Seoul.

Thanks to all who helped organise the conference, shared their work and came to hear about and offer feedback on my own.

On the same day Larissa Waters - formerly a lawyer with the Environmental Defenders Office - was appointed leader of the Greens, the Crisafulli Government, after pledging pre-election that they'd continue to fund the EDO, has revealed they're cutting it. www.abc.net.au/news/2025-05...
Environmental Defenders Office funding completely cut in Queensland
The office provides legal aid to those dealing with environmental and planning disputes and has received about $500,000 per year over the past five years from the Queensland government.

Larissa Waters is the Greens' new leader. Besides having an apt surname for an ecological party leader, what do we know about her? And what might we expect from her leadership of Australia's largest minor party?

Excellent piece from A/Prof Grant Blashki, noting that heatwaves are Australia’s deadliest natural disaster – surpassing bushfires, floods, etc. As Blashki writes, at the heart of this issue is climate justice, with vulnerable groups disproportionately impacted pursuit.unimelb.edu.au/articles/hea...

-the climate is already changing
-heatwaves & droughts are going to have huge impacts on VIC
-what we do now matters

Australia charts hottest spring on record for mean temperatures – as it happened
This blog is now closed. Get our breaking news email, free app or daily news podcast The health minister, Mark Butler, is holding a press conference in Adelaide to announce the endometriosis drug Visanne will be added to the pharmaceutical benefits scheme. It’s the first listing of an endo treatment in three decades. This is a condition that impacts more than 1 million women – one in seven women and teenage girls – and for too long, too many women have been made to suffer in silence. [They’ve] been told by many healthcare professionals, it has to be said, that this is “normal”. That it is a normal part of period pain or many other explanations for debilitating, crippling pain. This is all about providing cheaper medicines and cutting-edge treatment to Australian patients generally, but [particularly] in the area of endometriosis, which has attracted such inadequate support for hundreds of thousands of Australian women. This listing is beyond time. The major contributor to the record has been the minimum temperatures, which averaged 17.2ºC over the spring season for the site, and were elevated by cloud cover, precipitation, and most notably, humidity.
