Time to re-up:
Daniel Stern’s scream when Kevin puts the tarantula on his face, is one of the greatest screams in all of cinema.

More please.
It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

Friendly holiday reminder that people rush to submit before the holidays and declined reviews get even worse than usual. And editors want to enjoy holiday time, too. Patience and grace to all (and to all a good night)!
I sent someone a peer review request, and they accepted it within 15 minutes… I could cry. For the last paper I tried to send out, I had to request 14 reviewers to get 2 people to agree, and it took almost 2 months.

This is not only epically stupid, but incredibly misogynistic.

It's somehow considered charming when men act like ignorant doofuses about raising children. But if a woman said this, the shaming and name calling would be overwhelming.
Jimmy Fallon: "And do you use ChatGPT when raising your baby?"

Sam Altman: "I cannot imagine figuring out how to raise a newborn without ChatGPT."

Has anyone developed a screening assessment for Uncle Rico Syndrome yet? Youth and school sports orgs need that kind of thing when hiring coaches.

Same. My students this semester have been considerably more engaged and motivated than at any point in the past several years.
For what it's worth, my experience was the exact opposite.

I found my students this semester to be more engaged and excited about the work than they have been in years.
Hearing, and seeing, many university professors express despair, of this sort, this fall. Faculty are famously headstrong and truculent, if sometimes grouchy. But this affect is new. ’ve never seen the widespread descent into sorrow before, that I am seeing now.

He hopes that's still true."

50 years after the birth of special education, some fear for its future under Trump
The Trump administration has fired, or tried to fire, many of the federal staff who manage and enforce federal disability law in schools.

This indiscriminate dismantling of education research has been plaguing my colleagues & dear friends all year. Eliminating the penny spent on education research will do nothing for the federal debt but will continue US decline in world rankings.

It is deeply frustrating that I have to sift through 4 full pages of “simple/easy” recipes that cut corners before I can find the proper recipe I’m looking for.

I don’t begrudge anyone that wants the simple version. But damn, the paid placement has made proper search near impossible.

Have I ever dropped Rush lyrics into feedback on a student's paper? Yes I have.

Do I think they recognize the reference? Eh. Sometimes they surprise me.

Will I do it again? For sure.

Does anyone else have students that apologize too much?

I've noticed a big increase in students apologizing for things like, "bothering" me during office hours, mediocre performance on a quiz, asking questions about an assignment, or getting feedback on work. None of these require an apology.

Something happened this morning during a lecture that I was simply not prepared for. 1/4

I was invited to give a talk about special ed, inclusion, and dyslexia to students at the American University of Central Asia. It was a delightful group that was very engaged.

Donald Trump is trying to fire nearly every federal worker who supports special needs education.

It’s kids with disabilities who will suffer.

The cruelty is the point.
