Alleged professional account, although I do not represent my employer here

Demographer, lapsed geographer, data and analytics guy, etc

Degrees from Penn State and Maryland
If you are a Pennsylvania-knower, you will recognize that Hamburg is in close proximity to Reading, and fairly close to Lancaster County and Lehigh County, all of which have a *ton* of Latino immigrants and descendants
In the last month ICE has bought warehouses in:

- Hagerstown, MD: $102 million
- Surprise, AZ: $70 million
- Hamburg, PA: $87 million
- Tremont, PA: $120 million
- San Antonio, TX: $82 million
- El Paso, TX: $123 million
- Social Circle, GA: price unknown

This is unprecedented.

I had a libertarian acquaintance telling me right after the election that nothing would fundamentally change and we should all calm down. Anyway,
I feel like I'm losing my goddamnned mind.

This op-ed was written by Kathrine Mangu-Ward. Katherine is editor-in-chief of Reason magazine.

Reason fired @shikhadalmia.bsky.social for being too anti-Trump.

Today I'm releasing probably the most important scholarly thing I've ever worked on - a report based on talking with 144 people about why they don't vote or only vote regularly, and on what needs to be done to build a democracy that can include everyone.

I literally cannot imagine answering a question about the attractiveness of someone I was recommending for a job, much less proactively including that information

I guess this is why I work in local government and not eLiTe InStItUtIoNs?
This is the Yale professor's explanation for why he described the physical attractiveness of a student in an email to Epstein. He explicitly says he regrets nothing about their association.

Again, I'm so happy Yale hired David Brooks to restore trust.

I think LLMs are useful, also I think whoever has been in charge of marketing LLMs that past two years needs to be punished in some way proportionate to their crimes

I was an undergrad exchange student at Uppsala 20 years ago. It’s a wonderful place and these look like great opportunities
We're recruiting 2 PhD candidates in human geography here in Uppsala, one position focused on urban/housing issues and one in political ecology.

Please spread the word/repost etc. Being a PhD student in Sweden is a good gig.

Folds on the Kennedy Center 3 weeks ago: I was sick to my stomach when I quit because I knew they were going to run it into the ground. No one that they were appointing had any experience in arts administration, but that was never the point. The point was to take that, run over it, and move on.

Did the indoor cat sneak out via the janky kitchen door into the 15 degree weather and disappear, or is she asleep inside in a weird place

You’d like to think it wouldn’t be the former, wouldn’t you? And yet…

I knew the origin of this phrase was not what folk etymology sometimes suggests, but learning the actual etymology was interesting for its own sake, at least to me:

I’m going to try to start using this account again

The first go-round I found it hard to keep it from becoming another place where everything is takes on current events, and the world’s too harsh right now to subject myself to that daily

So if I unfollow/mute you to avoid that, it’s not personal

I have a joke about tidyverse but you’ll need to look on the other side of the %>% for the punchline
I have a joke about R but object of type ‘closure’ is nonsubsettable.
