OK, I wasn't driven to weigh in on Oates' masterful Musk takedown until this moment, but this pushes it over the edge into brilliance.

The greatest era of licensed games, where Keanu Reeves fights a 20ft Tom Waits and the scene in which De Niro's Frankenstein Monster sneaks into Helena Bonham Carter's bedroom and pulls her heart out of her chest is depicted as a boss fight where Helena Bonham Carter is the boss.
i have not watched GDT's Frankenstein but i am firm in my belief that it needs a tie-in adventure/fighting game like the 90s Kenneth Branagh one did on the Sega CD. and they need to keep in elizabeth's roll attack

There is genuinely a lot to unpack with the amount of people who now see someone reading and automatically interpret it as a flex from the person that they know how to do that.

I suddenly remembered the documentary moment (I think this was in either 100 SCARIEST MOVIE MOMENTS or NIGHTMARES IN RED, WHITE & BLUE) where Roger Corman talked about how great it was that you think the monster's gonna kill the kid in Whale's FRANKENSTEIN but he doesn't.

I honestly think it rocks that del Toro's FRANKENSTEIN is not a direct adaptation of the novel, yet is still framed identically (first wraparound, Victor's POV, Creature's POV, end wraparound) to the novel.

As soon as I heard the word "countenance" in del Toro's FRANKENSTEIN, I said "Yeah, this guy gets it, alright."

Alright, now that the Frankenstein fuckers are awakened, let's all put together a film adaptation of Clive Barker's FRANKENSTEIN IN LOVE.

There's a special excitement any time one of your deep cut faves gets a moment in the spotlight and for me, still, one of the shining moments of X-MEN '97 was watching everyone find out that Deathbird rocks.

This is, in my mind, the ultimate example. It completely dwarfs conversations about how great the original is (in fact, you barely ever hear the first one get so much as mentioned) and only because it's perfect.

November 1st was like Halloween all over again. 50% off Spirit haul, 10% off movie store haul, and the RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD 3 script book waiting in the mailbox when I got home.

This is not a knock on either film, but it's interesting that Coppola's DRACULA often gets called out for overindulgence and excess (that's the point, and it's great at it) while Branagh's FRANKENSTEIN plays it way more straight yet is ten times hokier.
I love Bram Stoker's Dracula. I've seen people accuse it of being "style over substance," but the whole film is about love cascading over the ages like a river of blood. Why not be emotionally charged to the brim? Why not be luscious in form? Its the treatment this particular film deserves.

I've re-posted many articles from my "Histories of Horror" column from Council of Zoom. Well, for the final day of Halloween Week, I brought it back from the dead, with a new essay breaking down the historical and cultural background of Michael Myers & Halloween. nbrehmer.medium.com/histories-of...

Aside from everything else, I think SCREAM 5 made it very hard for Sidney to be the protagonist again, logistically. Using her sparingly, you get one of the best moments of the sequels, when she can instantly clock a killer's fake "victim" performance. Hard to put her back in the center after that.

Entirely unplanned that I finished reading the book on the SCREAM movies the day the SCREAM 7 trailer dropped. Anyway, as I anticipated, the book was great until it got to the chapter on SCREAM 7.

It's cool to stay away from marketing materials to avoid spoilers, but it sets you up for failure if you're going to develop incredibly, incredibly specific expectations regardless. (I've seen five separate people say they thought WELCOME TO DERRY was going to be an episodic anthology)

"But Keanu!" "Winona!" You may inevitably say about the cast of BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA, but that does nothing to change the fact that Tom Waits as Renfield is one of the most left-field, unexpected, inspired casting choices in cinema history.
