Some bad news at the start of #COP30

Last week, you'll recall the UN's synthesis report of national climate plans (NDCs) said current NDCs will result in a 17% decrease in emissions by 2035 if fully implemented.

Well, there's been an update, and now it's down to 12%.

The #COP30 agenda just got adopted smoothly.

That sets a positive tone and momentum for the rest of the conference.

With the following stipulations:

- Item on implementation of GST 1 decision was withdrawn

- 8 items proposed by parties not included in the agenda

#COP30 AGENDA FIGHT: Battle looms over which issues to discuss at COP30 (an "agenda fight")

Proposed late additions to agenda:

* trade
* finance
* deforestation
* ambition
* reporting

Hence, now on 4th version of agenda (!)

This must be resolved before negotiations begin 🧵

Important new research published last month in Nature Sustainability shows that the oil and gas industry has only a 1.42% share of global renewable energy.

A new @climateanalytics.org report has come out today, with a profoundly hopeful message: even though the world is on track to exceed 1.5°C of global warming, we can peak at 1.7°C and get temperatures back down well below 1.5°C by end of century.

But.... only if we phase out fossil fuels, fast. 🧵

The new UNEP Emissions Gap Report points out that "no NDCs set targets to reduce oil and gas production or trim inefficient fossil fuel subsidies".

That countries are not addressing fossil fuels - at the heart of the climate crisis - is deeply worrying.

Shocking new report from @foejapan.bsky.social showing that JBIC's (Japan's publicly backed export credit agency) drove 408 million tons of CO2eq in 2024 - mostly in overseas fossil projects.

If JBIC were a country, that would make it the 20th largest global emitter.

Two remarkable assumptions in the modelling for Australia's new climate target

#1 (via @tomswann.bsky.social) - a very significant drop in demand for coal and gas supplied by Australia (and a subsequent drop in domestic emissions because digging that shit up is so profoundly dirty)
Coal and gas production falls a fair bit in all scenarios behind the govts emissions reduction targets.

The fact it's almost the same in each policy scenario suggests it is driven mostly not by Aust policy in the model.
