🇲🇽 Mexican cartels are acquiring .50-caliber ammunition manufactured at a U.S. Army–owned plant in Missouri and using it to outgun Mexican police and attack civilians, according to a joint investigation by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and The New York Times. Since 2012, U.S. agents have seized more than 40,000 rounds of .50-caliber ammunition in border states, about a third stamped with markings from the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. Designed for military use against vehicles and aircraft, the rounds have been linked to cartel attacks that downed helicopters, pierced armored vehicles, and killed Mexican police officers. Lake City began selling .50-caliber ammunition into the U.S. civilian market in 2008, creating a retail stream that traffickers can exploit. When questioned about cartel use of Lake City ammunition, the Army praised the policy for its saving, saying “allowing commercial sales from the plant has saved taxpayers around $50 million annually,” by lowering government ammunition costs. The Trump administration has designated six Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations and continues to demand tougher action from Mexico. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has described the southward flow of U.S.-made guns as a central driver of cartel activity, noting that roughly 70–90% of weapons seized from organized crime in Mexico originate in the United States. She has argued that security enforcement must run both ways: stopping drugs moving north and weapons moving south. Some steps have been taken to this end. In September 2025, Mexico and the U.S. announced “Operation Firewall,” a joint initiative following a visit by Marco Rubio that expanded firearm tracing nationwide in Mexico and committed Washington to increase southbound inspections to curb U.S.-purchased weapons flowing into the country.
