it is a basic fact that all children have remarkable linguistic heterogeneity, but not all children are granted the space to use this heterogeneity in schools. so the problem is clearly not in how children use language, but in how schools are often set up to deny children those opportunities.

Funny how, in our time of institutional austerity in which our instructional budget is getting slashed, we can’t hire more faculty/staff, and course caps are rising, there’s still plenty of money for AI initiatives 🤔

Everyone talks about writers’ block but grader’s block may be one of the biggest challenges of my academic life 😩 Any tips appreciated 🙏

The file is in. Now the wait starts...
Tenure files should count as publications. So many hours, so much work. I‘m glad I started with enough time but I am not even close to finishing 😵‍💫😮‍💨

In other news, the rainy weather motivated me enough to finally make atole de avena ☺️

Every person who gets vaccinated helps all of us BUT ALSO every time you mask it helps all of us, even if it’s only sometimes.
Demanding clean air helps all of us. Please selfishly get vaccinated. Then please selfishly do more. Even just a little bit more.
I’m going to say this louder this time: if you are lying about having a high-risk condition to get a Covid vaccine, all good, do what you want to do BUT show some actual goddamn respect for people who *actually* have that condition and start masking.

Many people are going to suffer because of what RFK is doing.

You know who can slow the march toward death and disability?

You.

You can save lives. You can keep folks well enough to fight for justice. To work so they can feed their kids and stay housed.

You just have to wear a mask.

You do not assess the pedagogical competence of an immigrant teacher through their accent.

You assess the pedagogical competence of an immigrant teacher through their actual pedagogy.

Really infuriating stuff. There's no place for AI in the classroom. AFT needs to follow the lead of @aaup.org and understand that these technologies are part of the increasing move to corporatize the classroom.
SMH: news that the American Federation of Teachers is partnering with Open AI and Microsoft on an AI initiative is especially disappointing because teachers’ unions can and should fight back against Big Tech’s attempts to deprofessionalize and disempower educators.

You gotta believe that your community is worth fighting for, in whatever way you can. You gotta hold onto your people and your shared future together as an anchor. Hold onto those things that you love, and let that fill you so full to the top that there is no room inside of you for despair.

Every single part of this is infuriating. It ends with a philsophy prof saying that "AI is here to stay" and "one of the most powerful tools that humanity has ever created." No and no.

I am so deeply uninterested in AI. Just think of all the 🤩 stories that aren't being covered by journalists, the worthy projects that aren't being funded, the institutional challenges that aren't being addressed by uni administrators — bc their 👀 are all focused on this dumb product nobody asked for
Another hour, another call for another conference about teaching with AI. I am so supremely annoyed and bored and 💔 by this reactionary obsession: what a waste of opportunity to think about infinitely more constructive, convivial, empowering, life-affirming and existentially consequential things

Chicago folks, how much can I trust the weather forecast for the next few days? I need to pack smartly for a conference

We know the direct cost of Elon Musk’s AI data centers. We know that using his AI tools pollutes the air that people breathe. And still there are those who would rather steal life-sustaining resources from real people in exchange for a shallow imitation of a person

Between review/publication delays, cuts to grants, and broader financial insecurity and uncertainty, every institution should revise its promotion criteria (if it hasn’t recently). We’re in a new environment, and even criteria written 5 years ago are less applicable now.

GenAI bootlickers be like "Oh ChatGPT can do [thing]. We have to rethink the whole [thing] system".

How about we rethink the techbro oligarchy pushing this shit into our livelihoods and expecting US to adapt to IT!? Oh, sorry, is that too hard for you to think about? Thinking is hard, isn't it? 🙄
First, an LLM can't "do better" it just guesses.
It doesn't KNOW anything.
Education has plenty of problems, but ChatGPT is not the answer, and instead is the Trojan Horse Big Tech is using for the wholesale automation of academia.
And students are not going to benefit from that IN ANY WAY.
If chatgpt can do a college level course better than a student... what does that say about the standards of the degree... and the usefulness of whatever they are teaching... the only point I'm trying to make... is we need a total rethink on education...
