I started being regularly published when I was 25. I didn't make my first dollar writing until I was 30. I didn't sell my first novel or screenplay until I was 35. Many of you hadn't even heard of anything I'd written until I was over 40.

You have time. There is no expiration date on writers.

The number one advice any & every writing professional can & will give you is this:

DO NOT BE AFRAID TO SUCK.

You have spent years reading books, watching movies & TV, developing taste to know good from bad. NO ONE GETS TO READ YOUR WRITING UNTIL YOU LET THEM. Trust your taste & write fearlessly.

The reason I'm so positive about aspiring writers is that I believe that:

* Anyone who can string a sentence together can write a story, script or book.

* Anyone who puts enough time, effort, and workshopping into it can write a GOOD story, script, or book.

* Anything finished can be fixed.

Feels like I'm just posting to the void since I'm just getting started here, but why not. I write a weekly newsletter, and this week I write about how far away from reading and critical thinking we’ve come. It's lacking in our education, COVID learning loss, social media attention spans, all of it.

I don't know who needs to hear this, everyone I think, but if you send a PDF to your kindle and put 'convert' as the subject it will change it to epub format for you, you're welcome

One of my best-remembered BOP stories was inspired by a book of architecture in Istanbul.

A book about Audie Murphy has shown up in SEVERAL stories.

A big stack of cheap reference books you bought on sale = storytelling MAGIC.

BEST thing about this site,, I can hide negative replies and unattach my posts from reposts that are rude,,, I ain’t gonna take no negativity or trolling on my page.

You will not build up by tearing others down here.

If you find yourself on the side of those who wish to limit what types of families and lives and experiences people can find in books on a library shelf then you are not on the side of libraries and what they stand for at their core.

Public Libraries can be wonderful places where children and adults can find books that they can see themselves reflected in, no matter who they are, and books that can introduce them to entire other lived experiences. Both are so valuable!

Payback is a bitch. And so are we.

You’re on notice. We aren’t going anywhere. We’re not hiding.

We’re not being silent. But we are taking notes.
