Trump is attempting to associate all acts of protest with violence to justify govt repression against legitimate dissent.

As @timothysnyder.bsky.social once wrote:

"Authoritarian regimes use isolated incidents of violence to justify broad crackdowns. They don’t seek justice - they seek control."

Someone tell me how this is in any way different to a bog-standard authoritarian dictator.
Trump threatens anyone who protests his birthday military parade this Saturday:

"If there's any protester who wants to come out, they will be met with very big force."

The right to protest is protected under the First Amendment of the US Constitution.

– Loyalist media amplifying fear
– Attempts to bait more unrest to justify harsher crackdowns

This isn’t law enforcement. It’s a power play.

What to expect next:

– Escalation framed as “restoring order”
– Mass arrests under vague pretexts
– Targeting of protest organisers and journalists
– Expansion of emergency powers
– Demonisation of dissent as “terrorism”

In case you're wondering, authoritarians use this strategy of escalation to manufacture crisis, provoke outrage, then use the reaction to justify repression. It’s not about restoring order, it's about creating a spectacle of chaos they can claim only they can control.
Escalating to escalate.

Easy to be glib, but of course Keir Starmer must walk on eggshells around the man whose indispensible and wise counsel has seen the Party's popularity come to rival that of foot fungus.

All four horsemen of the Brexit Betrayal apocalypse are galloping across tomorrow's RW front pages... And for what? The thinnest of thin gruel.

Starmer and Labour may come to regret not having fanned the ire of their foes with a much more ambitious Brexit reset, since the ire was coming either way.

Brexit hasn't been betrayed.

The British people have not been betrayed.

The betrayal was Brexit.

Once that is the established narrative, we can all go forward together.

If a foreign adversary snuck into our Federal budget and cut science research and education the way we’re cutting it ourselves — strategically undermining America’s long-term health, wealth, and security — we would likely consider it an act of war.

There's no placating the Brexiters, no reasoning with them, no basic comprehension or adulthood. You can't debate papers behaving like the Sun or the Mail this morning. There's nothing to debate with. They view all trading relations with Europe as humiliation.

The RW papers, which already scream Brexit betrayal on a daily basis, will dial their criticism up
to 11 as soon as Labour changes a single atom of our relationship with the EU.

Given that, they might as well go for something spectacular instead of these tiny nibbles. It won't change the reaction.
