How did organs originated in the evolution of multicellularity? Despite their obvious importance, we still lack a theory of evolutionary organogenesis. New preprint out! Using ~75k environmental OTUs + 77 fossil calibrations, we reconstructed a Proterozoic timeline of eukaryote evolution. Our results show crown eukaryotes were already diversifying >1.6 Ga, long before the first undisputed fossils (~1.05 Ga).

Very nice evidence of the power of convergence evolution in #terrestrialization. Congrats to all authors! @martaalvarez.bsky.social Jordi, Davide, @phil-donoghue.bsky.social & Jialin #metazoans
Happy to share Jialin's first publication. She did a great job exploring the transition to land in animals. Co-supervised by the great Jordi Paps and me and in collaboration with Davide Pisani and @phil-donoghue.bsky.social

More on the ancient foundation of animal development. Coyle & King illustrate how core regulatory modules were present in our pre-animal ancestors. The key was not invention, but recycling & new protein interactions. #CellBiology #multicellularity #protistsOnSky

Congrats Haillot & the whole @ulrichtechnau.bsky.social lab! Another brilliant example of how we shouldn't assume simplicity in non-bilaterian animals. Triploblasty’s roots seem to run older than we thought! Nice to see a crosstalk between MAPK, β-catenin & Notch to define identities. #EvoDevo
Finally, the excellent postdoc work of Emmanuel Haillot is out, where he dissected the integration of Wnt, MAPK and Notch signaling in defining mesoderm and endoderm identities in the diploblast Nematostella. Strikingly similar to sea urchins. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

🚀 Watching Núria Ros-Rocher grow from PhD student to independent @cnrs.fr researcher has been a joy. Talent + grit + kindness = 🔥. Huge congrats, Núria—and kudos, Thibaut. And I know this is just the beginning! Can’t wait for the next C. flexa chapters!
A thousand bravos for Núria Ros-Rocher, who just secured a permanent @cnrs.fr researcher position in our lab. These positions are (too) rare but give much-needed job security to young scientists and allow long-term projects. Núria will dive deep into the natural history of C. flexa 🧪🌊 #ProudPI
