It’s time for more scrutiny of swapping grass pitches for astroturfs, some councillors and academics say. The change may mean the pitches can withstand more use, but it also means they won’t absorb as much rain, or sustain as many creatures, they say.

Florida seems to prefer the worst aspects of medievalism to sociology - North Korean levels of anti intellectualism #Sociology #Florida #TrumpsAmerica
I talked with @victorerikray.bsky.social about the repression we’re facing at public universities here in Florida, where the state is attempting to impose a textbook on our intro classes, insisting that no published textbook complies with state law.

Here’s Part 1. Part 2 drops next week.
What's the Matter with Florida? An Interview with Zachary Levenson

You could not make it up
I do want to shout-out my fellow sociologists, who have collectively created a discipline so woke that not a single one of our introductory textbooks can make it past Florida's censors.

Great work everyone.

Very much getting the impression that a lot of politicians are reaching for the Under-16 ban. Momentum behind that rather than a deeper understanding of platforms, algorithms and any alternative view.

@atu-ie.bsky.social disengaged last week from X with immediate effect. My own personal account signposted a move to @bsky.app over twelve month ago. Starting to see movement from many organisations in Ireland now, I believe in the right direction.

The Irish Dept of Justice has two speeds:
1. This is very complicated and takes a lot of time (ie, we don't want to do it.)
2. This is urgent and we need to guillotine it through the Oireachtas (ie we want to do it but we don't want any meaningful scrutiny).
