Leap Card should be extended to railway journeys outside major cities!
It’s less for a journey between Greystones and Howth (35km w/1 hr duration)than btw Wexford and Enniscorthy (20 kms, w/22min duration)
Why not encourage modal shift outside of the cities?

Dept of Transport won't fund capacity study for Rosslare-Dublin rail despite population growth. Double tracking, dynamic loops & extra platform could help without costly Bray Head tunnel. SOUTH EAST ON TRACK I refer to the matter you raised in Parliamentary Question No. 190 of 25 September last, which has been referred to the National Transport Authority (NTA) for reply. We note that the Minister provided a substantive response to this Parliamentary Question. To add to the Minister's response, the NTA's Greater Dublin Area Transport Strategy 2022-2042, adopted in 2023, includes a recommendation to extend the DART service to Wicklow Town. It is intended to provide this extension initially through the use of battery-electric DART carriages, which will be able to operate using the overhead electrification as far as Greystones and can then operate under battery power between Greystones and Wicklow larnód Eireann, in collaboration with the NTA, is currently working on the development of design proposals for the railway section between Greystones and Wicklow. While it had been intended to undertake a public consultation in relation to the emerging proposals, it now appears possible to deliver these enhancements largely within the footprint of the current railway line. Accordingly, the focus is now on developing those designs and it is currently anticipated that a planning application will be made to Wicklow County Council in early 2026 for the necessary planning consent to develop the project. In respect of the DART+ Coastal South, this project aims to improve DART services on the existing DART line south of Dublin City, with the current focus on enhancing services between Bray and Greystones. Design work is ongoing to increase the number of trains per hour between Bray and Greystones from 2 to 3. larnród Éireann is currently finalising the development and evaluation of potential solutions to enhance capacity in the line with the aim of identifying an emerging preferred option (EPO). Something we’ve been advocating for is an earlier train serving #Wexford from #Dublin. The first train of the day lands in Wexford Town and Rosslare Strand/Harbour after 12noon, which rules out using the train for business and leisure activities in the morning.

Attended a great talk down on the beach in Rosslare harbour: part of the House by the Sea artistic exhibition focusing on climate. Got the bus down & getting the train back. Would have got the train both ways but madly the earliest you can get to Rosslare by train is 12:45 @seontrack.bsky.social

From today, the late evening departure from Wexford (9:35pm) and Enniscorthy (9:59pm) heading north no longer requires a change of trains at Gorey for those who wish to travel to Wicklow and Dublin.

It's a minor change that will make your journey that little bit easier.

This is concerning re: additional trains for the Fleadh. This year, so far...instead of having the 50 additional services we got last year, there are 0. The only "additional service" listed is just a slight reschedule of an existing service by 10mins. Hopefully they're just late releasing info...

South East on Track are disappointed that Iarnród Éireann has not confirmed any additional train services to/from Wexford for Fleadh Cheoil na h-Éireann 2025, and are calling on Iarnród Éireann to step up and provide more services. Last year, 50 additional services were put in place to bring people to and from Wexford for the week. There were similar additional services put in place for previous Fleadhs in Mullingar and Drogheda. An advertised "additional service" on Iarnród Éireann's website is merely the delaying of the normal 9:25pm departure from Wexford O'Hanrahan for Dublin to 9:35pm. You can already catch this "additional train" for the other 51 weeks of the year. Iarnród Éireann sent out an email on July 23rd advising attendees that, "There are numerous car parks in place on the outskirts of Wexford Town with free shuttle buses operating to the town centre." The official Fleadh Cheoil website is still advertising that, "...[a]dditional train services will be added for the duration of the Fleadh." Even this far out, many of the Wexford-Dublin services are beginning to book out for the Fleadh week. It's clear that the demand is there for far more services than five per weekday, and three at the weekends. With organisers expecting over 500,000 additional visitors to Wexford Town that week, Iarnród Éireann needs to help meet the demand to bring people to the Fleadh in an environmentally friendly manner and to deliver the economic boon that such visitor numbers can bring. One of our members has just experienced a 45minute wait at #Wicklow due to a delay on the southbound train. Aging commuter style 29000s and single track infrastructure contributes to knock-on delays to services in both directions between #Dublin and #Wexford. Time for improvement!
