South East on Track
@seontrack.bsky.social
Campaigning for better rail transport in the South East of Ireland.
Leap Card should be extended to railway journeys outside major cities!
It’s less for a journey between Greystones and Howth (35km w/1 hr duration)than btw Wexford and Enniscorthy (20 kms, w/22min duration)
Why not encourage modal shift outside of the cities?

Dept of Transport won't fund capacity study for Rosslare-Dublin rail despite population growth. Double tracking, dynamic loops & extra platform could help without costly Bray Head tunnel. Thanks to TDs @rodericogorman.bsky.social, Whitmore & Lawlor for support. NTA response attached. Plans due 2026:

From today, the late evening departure from Wexford (9:35pm) and Enniscorthy (9:59pm) heading north no longer requires a change of trains at Gorey for those who wish to travel to Wicklow and Dublin.

It's a minor change that will make your journey that little bit easier.

🚨 Additional trains confirmed for the Fleadh 🚨

(Wouldn’t it be great to get these for the other 51 weeks of the year?!)

There are still some cheaper €9.99 fares available across these services! Come to #Wexford, enjoy the #Fleadh and leave the car at home #Fleadh2025 #PublicTransport #Rail

PRESS RELEASE: July 25 2025
Re: Additional Rail Services for Fleadh Cheoil na h-Éireann

We are calling on Iarnród Éireann to confirm additional services. We are concerned that there has been no timetable released. #wexford #fleadh #feadh25

One of our members has just experienced a 45minute wait at #Wicklow due to a delay on the southbound train. Aging commuter style 29000s and single track infrastructure contributes to knock-on delays to services in both directions between #Dublin and #Wexford. Time for improvement!

You can’t beat the view up the East coast on a sunny evening. One of the nicest train journeys on the island. #Wexford #Dublin

Colm McCarthy has been proven wrong about rail in Ireland again and again and again. He was against the DART, he was against the Luas. He has opposed every successful piece of public infrastructure we have - but he STILL gets a platform to spout his contrarian nonsense.

A reminder that the Dublin-Rosslare rail journey takes as long now as it did in 1983! There have been improvements south of Bray, but the Connolly to Bray section has become congested in the last 40 years. We'll be calling on the new government to invest in infrastructure to improve journey times.

The signage at the Wexford-Dublin stations was updated before Christmas.

It looks sharp…however some eagle eyed passengers informed us that there’s a blast from the past (or future?) included @irishrail.bsky.social? Hopefully a sign of things to come for #Wexford #Waterford?

We'll be having our first meeting of 2025 on Wednesday January 22 at 8pm via Google Meet. Come along an join in if you'd like to help with improving rail services in the South East. With a new government forming, there's a lot of work to do. URL on the image or please DM/email for direct link:

Can we do something similar on the Wexford / Rosslare to Waterford line? Of course. But we need the Department of Transport, Iarnród Eireann, the NTA and all stakeholders to think about how rail integrates in our community and how it can best serve all potential passengers.
January 10, 2025 at 4:59 PM
5/6 Local authorites are able to contract with the rail service and consult on timetables - there is no facility for this in Ireland - the NTA decides services. Additionally - there are plans to revive the old station buildings for community use - imagine this for Clonmel, Wellingtonbridge, Carrick

In transport - frequency is freedom - by running this train every hour in each direction - it becomes a viable means of living for peope - for commuting, leisure, socialising.
The services uses LINT railcars which have bike storage and good for shorter trips on rural lines

Is that how this line operates?
Not at all.
Despite the small population, there are 16 services in each direction EVERY WEEKDAY from 5am until 8:30pm.
It also connects well with other services
So, why the disparity between a regional line in Germany and how we approach it in Ireland?
January 10, 2025 at 4:59 PM
(2/6) The RB73 links three towns - Neustadt-Dosse (pop 3,645), Wusterhausen/Dosse (pop 5,755) and Kyritz (pop 9,281) - not big cities, small towns. In Ireland a rail line like this would be either A) closed or B) have a once a day service like the Nenagh line or Rosslare-Waterford did in 2010.
January 10, 2025 at 4:59 PM
1/6: A THREAD based on one we posted on *the other site* a while back: It's often argued we don't have the population for regional rail in Ireland. As a comparison, let's look at another European country and how they approach this: We're looking at the RB73 run by Hanseatische Eisenbahn in Germany.

Merry Christmas to all of our followers. We made more progress this year thanks to your help and effort.

We’ve asked Santa for a reopening of the #Wexford to #Waterford rail line and an increase in frequency from #Rosslare to #Dublin. 🎁

I think the plan is a direct curve at the junction with a new platform. It would mean running at an average speed of 100 mph - doable but a lot of work to get there
December 13, 2024 at 6:15 PM
Since 2000, the rail network across the country has been expanded - with the #southeast and #Waterford being the big exception. We'll continue to campaign vigorously for infrastructure investment in our region across the lifetime of the next government.

If (and it's a big if) the recommendations of the review are implemented, Waterford will be within approx 90 minutes by rail of Dublin, Cork, Limerick. Clonmel, Kilkenny, Wexford within 30 minutes by rail. Thats why it's so important to push all parties on implementing the review.
December 12, 2024 at 9:48 PM
[5/5 ]This is a realistic and relatively inexpensive project that could revolutionise transport across the Southern region. Reopening the line to Rosslare opens up the entire region with connections to #Cork, #Wexford, #Kerry, #Galway and #Tipperary.

[4/5] Full route modernisation - new signalling, relaying sections of track - adding loops at Clonmel and Tipp would give a Limerick-Waterford journey time of 1 hour 30 - 90 minutes. This would comfortably beat the private car. This brings Clonmel within 30 minutes of Waterford City
December 12, 2024 at 5:41 PM
[3/5] However, digging into the report gives some hope for the line. Very simply, (an inexpensively) the journey time could be cut to 1 hour 50mins, by automating the level crossings and removing the reversal at Limerick Junction. This beats the private car.
December 12, 2024 at 5:41 PM
[2/5] Service on the line is currently terrible. No trains on Sundays, only two trains per direction Monday through Saturday and the early morning #Waterford - #Limerick trip takes 2 hours and 46 minutes.
