ln 1985, the Stasi had enough new recruits to warrant production of the training video REVISOR. It demonstrated *how to secretly break into a suspect's apartment,* *confiscate their belongings*, and then *kidnap them off the street in broad daylight.*

Love notes like this left in books by earlier librarians. This profession runs on the hope of ever having time to love things as they deserve, and our archives are full of the epitaphs of good intentions.

such a powerful image, however mediated it's been by the artist, copyists, etc over the centuries 📚 📜 🔥
It's not an analogue but this image of European friars burning indigenous (Maya and Aztec I think) books and cultural objects (c. 1585) feels like one of the reference points for whatever is unfolding.

I was telling one of my kids that it was physically impossible for an ad to play between songs on any of the records I own, and they asked "and you only have to pay for it once?" and you could see how strange that seemed. You cannot overstate how many basic rules of media consumption have changed.

That’s a good question, #bookhistory folks.
This scholar in his study got me pondering: who is the first living author in the west to appear in print? Many incunables are of medieval or classical texts, but who is the earliest living writer to see their works in print? Woodcut from Lyons in 1498. @theulspeccoll.bsky.social Inc.5.D.2.10[4435]
