That opening is so vital! That's what makes it difficult 😬

#writingcommunity #amediting #writersky
Ever had the rejection saying your opening isn’t “pulling them in?” There are many reasons someone doesn’t connect with your first page, but here’s a few of the biggest reasons we see agents/editors stop reading.

Keep going. I swear, the beginning is the hardest part.

Finally brought the words down to a reasonable 105k. ✒️ As much as I want to put this down and sleep for eons, I should go over it again before moving forward with the next steps.🥲

😱 it’s really the “actually read what you’ve written” part.
This is FOLLOWING the crippling anxiety of writing a synopsis (or two of different lengths) and query letter.

Said it before, will say it again. I expect rejection from agents, not because the I don’t believe in my effort or story but because I never won at bingo or raffles 🤪

Good advice! 😃
We hate to admit it, but it’s true. Auto-rejects happen, and they happen often. Here’s some things that can get you rejected without an agent even looking at your first pages.

Happy Monday, friends, and keep at it. You’ve got this.

Is there a query season? 🧐 I see posts hinting at something like that and I’m out of the loop.

Not there just yet but would be nice to know.

Life hits different when you're with like-minded people. To clarify, like-minded doesn't mean an echo chamber. I debate with friends all the time.

But it's...idk, a ✨vibe✨

I naturally write in purple prose.

Hope this doesn't come off as pretentious, cause it's actually a serious problem.

AI is staying. It's not going anywhere. Regulation won't benefit creatives. Been in enough meetings to know.

Use it wisely if you must, but don't use it as a way to shut off your brain. Use it to improve. To question. Not to replace.

That's what I think anyway 🤷

Do people have dream casts for their novels? I don’t but there is one actor I would love, he just doesn’t fit any of my characters 🥹

I get social media is part of almost any profession now but not sure how people maintain it. Much respect. Authors have to do a lot more than just hone their craft.

That slump life is crazy. I don't feel like making any moves in my writing journey. I have to edit three chapters and turn them in, but I lack motivation. Instead, I want to game like I get paid to...

I don't, btw. I don't get paid to game.

Does your query letter answer the following questions:
Who is the protagonist?
What does she want?
What is standing in her way?
What is she willing to do to get it?
What happens if she fails?

Sometimes, you might also need:
Why her? What “chosen one” attribute does she bring to the table?

I'm proud of THE FORGOTTEN KINGDOM. It's the most multi-layered piece of work I've written. It's also taken the longest time. However, I question if it's my best. The stories based on dreams or jokes might be better since I started after having more writing practice.

I will always repost this whenever I see it. I don't care how many times.

Update on my word struggle: I'm considering an alternative ending. This may free up the roughly 14k words I need to bring my novel to 120k.

How long should your novel be? I like this guideline from Writers Digest. It uses ranges and gives a good indication of what's realistic. But always use the requirements of the specific agent or publisher you're querying.

Just about every author who has been through the query trenches will agree: frankly, it sucks.

So here are seven querying hacks to make the process a LOT smoother — and give you back hours of precious time that you could be spending on your next story.
