Author (sometimes co-) of 14 books, most recently the NYT bestseller MCU: THE REIGN OF MARVEL STUDIOS with Joanna Robinson and Dave Gonzales. Writer of articles, player of games, walker of dog. He/him.
Another really good magazine bites the dust: RIP Charlotte magazine, 1968-2025. I was proud to be a small part of its history, but this is a tragedy for the city, where one media outlet after another has been going down or getting hollowed out into an Easter Bunny chocolate shell.

It's 20 years since @seanphillips.bsky.social and I exchanged a sketchbook back and forth in the mail, a drawn &painted call and response. INTERSECTIONS may be out of print but here is a flip through that sketchbook. You can still find the book out there :)

I would like to give a shout out to @gregpak.net , my favorite politics uncle and tireless documentarian of NYC life. He deserves to feel amazing tonight for all his work showing what organizing and participating actually looks like. And he writes comic books good too!

Flashback to when I wrote an article about HBO's Rome for TV Guide and had to grapple with the issue of whether it was a spoiler to tell TV Guide's readers that Julius Caesar got assassinated.

The one time I met Ace Frehley, he was in full Spaceman stage makeup and costume. Which, really, is how I'd want to remember him anyway. (It was backstage at MSG in 1996.) I wrote his obituary for the NY Times. Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2025/10/16/a...

Hello friends and family in the UK! There's a big sale happening on the audiobook version of this bestseller I wrote with @da7e.com and @jowrotethis.bsky.social -- but please don't be alarmed if the narrator has an American accent.
From SEPTEMBER 10th to SEPTEMBER 19th, Audible in the UK is selling the MCU: THE REIGN OF MARVEL STUDIOS audiobook for a low £3.99. (don't worry, I'll remind you)

What I love about this story is that he's taking on a role that was previously held by his mother. (No, not Fran Drescher — Patty Duke, who was president of SAG from 1985 to 1988.)

So here are my suggestions if you ever find yourself in a situation where you need to pronounce names in an official capacity.

1. Read them ahead of time.
2. Ask for help
3. Forvo.com is a great resource
4. Slow down, and use falling tones to give extra gravitas.
5. Apologize and own mistakes

I wrote an entire book (LAST NIGHT AT THE VIPER ROOM) by hand. Which gave it a particular mental texture and came with the satisfaction of a growing stack of pages. But it was a bear when it came time to type it up.
i'm actually a big believer in drafting by hand. i think it helps you think in a different way then typing on a screen

A comic about making comics (the alt text took longer to write than the comic did to draw * I drew this a few years ago)

I didn't realize how much I needed to see a good Superman movie. Question for people who are more familiar with the arcana than I am: when did the Fortress of Solitude relocate to Antarctica?

In both of my Brian Wilson remembrances, I made a point of mentioning Lewis Shiner's novel Glimpses, which hit me hard 30 years ago: it's about a man who, by listening to music, can time travel to the time and place when it was made. (Not just metaphorically, like the rest of us.) Still in print:

Please enjoy this table of possible future scenarios from a 1990s paper in a peer-reviewed journal on how to deal with nuclear waste storage in underground repositories in New Mexico. I found it while doing research for an article on nuclear waste storage. "WIPP" means "Waste Isolation Pilot Plant".

Rest in peace, Brian Wilson, purveyor of musical sunshine, melancholy, and melodic genius. I wrote two things about him, separated by at least a decade, that both ran today.

RIP to the stone cold genius Sly Stone. He squandered so much talent and goodwill, but he had mountains of both and so left an enormous legacy. If you can, listen to his air checks from when he was an Oakland DJ: you can hear him figuring out the blueprint for a musical revolution in real time.
