Another really good magazine bites the dust: RIP Charlotte magazine, 1968-2025. I was proud to be a small part of its history, but this is a tragedy for the city, where one media outlet after another has been going down or getting hollowed out into an Easter Bunny chocolate shell.

RIP to the amazing Gene Hackman. I can't think of a bad or a false performance by him, but my favorite is still THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS. Below, an excerpt from my book THE TAO OF BILL MURRAY about Bill and Gene on the TENENBAUMS set:
The movie's lead, playing the family patriarch, was Gene Hackman, who was brilliant and curmudgeonly. Wes Anderson was sufficiently abused by Hackman that he asked Bill to come to the set on his days off to run interference, because Bill was the only member of the cast or crew who wasn't intimidated by Hackman. "I'll stick up for Gene," Bill said ten years later. "The word 'cocksucker' gets thrown around a lot... I'd hear these stories, like 'Gene threatened to kill me today.' Kill you? You're in the union, he can't kill you. 'Gene threatened to take all of us and set fire to us.' It's a union shoot, it's New York, there are Teamsters, he can't set fire to you."
