one thing i keep thinking about is how there is simply no way to design a constitutional system that can resist authoritarian incursion if participants in that system do not actually care that much

All I'm saying is, if you ran a campaign on democracy being at stake and democracy lost, isn't it time to be massively freaking out instead of doing this

Interesting article but it also notes the deteriorating relationship between men and women where both parties are at each others throats. This doesn't bode well for society at all.

So the question is that in this new Trump admin, is he going to focus on the national faction, the global faction, or try to appease both?

At the same time, there is a more global-focused elite which wants conflict abroad to take out competitors, namely Russia and China and fight historical foes, such as Iran.

By that, I mean that there is a portion of the Republican party which is focused more domestically and is concerned about jobs, immigration, and the larger economy.

Yes, Trump does have a lot of support in the Republican party but only insofar as he executes the will of the Republican elites and donor class. Even then it's also based on which factionalism both internally and more generally.

For example, this idea that Trump can just say the word and the Republicans and SCOTUS will support him is pretty ridiculous. It assumes that these people are robots and don't have any political goals/games of their own.

I think that many of the concerns regarding the incoming Trump administration are legitimate but at the same time, some of the things that folks are saying demonstrates a complete lack of understanding about how the US political system works.

This is such an interesting article with several good book recs discussing how the Democrats can reinvigorate and rebuild local groups and discussion between local and national Dem groups.

Personally I think this is a great article socialists should read.

The US Is a Civic Desert. To Survive, the Democratic Party Needs to Transform Itself.
The party should jettison its consultant class and move toward a local-membership model that would help to rejuvenate civic life across the country.
