I think the divide in leftism is, those who come to leftism because they're Against something versus those who come to leftism because they're For something. In my experience, a lot of the people who define their politics in oppositional terms mostly only care about who gets to hurt people.

This is why studying the history of the humanities, as I did in my grad program, helps.

The seven liberal arts, the trivium and the quadrivium, that make up the studies humanitatis include both “science” and “arts” b/c the crude distinctions btw the two are distinctly modern!
