In a new section of CypressFiles, I am publishing translations of reports from life under Israeli bombardment in Iran.

During the #WomanLifeFreedom movement language of trauma & PTSD dominated Iranian social media discourse & narratives.
In this new piece, I examine the shortcomings of this framework in accounting for collective suffering caused by systematic & ongoing sociopolitical oppression.

Musk, alongside the American MAGA trolls, have already begun campaigning in many countries, and will continue if not stopped
WTAF

That’s not trolling the UK govt anymore - that’s straight up campaigning for a political party in a foreign country.

It’s serious.

This is a clever move by Khan and the timing can’t be coincidental. In light of yesterday’s comments, will France also recognise the immunity of Min Aung Hlaing, as Myanmar’s head of state & head of government, as they said they would for Netanyahu?

This is a key constituent of fascism & the very essence of ‘Muskism’: promoting bullshit, silencing truth-tellers & calling the whole grift ‘free speech’. Twitter as a rehearsal for the USA.
Trump has vowed to crack down on universities involved in misinformation research, or what he dubs the "censorship cartel" - e.g. by curbing funds to those that have "flagged content for removal”, or legal threats

“I'm pretty fucking scared," one professor tells me.

Seeing all this layed out so meticulously is eye opening, even if you've followed day-in day-out the media (non)coverage of the genocide. Well worth a read
for over a year, US media has helped the WH distance itself from the horrors of Gaza by employing 3, largely fictitious reporting genres.

I and my pseudonymous co-author detailed these 3 genres and how they helped successfully take pressure off the Biden admin www.thenation.com/article/soci...

White House–curated stories of performative outrage and feigned helplessness provided cover for an administration arming death on an industrial scale.

Before Twitter became X I was writing a super fun proposal for analysing emotions in digital spaces during Iran's WomanLifeFreedom movement. That's how I got into coding and data science and all.

And yes, I'm a philosopher by training!

Been meaning to rant about my frustration with academia #academicsky for a while, a recent rejection for a postdoc in phenomenology of loneliness, for which over 70 people had applied, has reignited the need for this rant.

My substack hasn't been updated since for almost a year, I found it odd to keep singular focus on Iran with a literal genocide taking place next door. Been thinking of redefining my writing as well. Academic job looking more unlikely everyday, might as well write from the heart 🤔

Been thinking (again) about how to define/maintain a public persona online. Bsky is a fun new start, but to have actual opinions expressed while also remaining a human person online is hard and scary.
I still blame academia for this constant second guessing of myself 🙄

Substack update - Armita was buried yesterday after being declared brain dead following 28 days of coma, after an apparent altercation with hijab patrols in Tehran's Metro. I wrote about the narratives, emotions, and the hierarchical view in valuing human life in Iran.
Armita Geravand : suppression of rage and grief
Only 17, Armita is the latest victim of the gender apartheid regime governing Iran. She was buried under heavy security yesterday after a month of being in a coma.

"It is hardly surprising that the official western stance has wholeheartedly embraced the Israeli settler-colonial narrative, which is essentially an imitation of the original Euro-modern/colonial discourse."
Yes. Precisely.
Gaza has sparked a moral meltdown in the West's colonial mindset
The western world remains unmoved by Palestinian suffering, demanding instead that they condemn themselves for daring to struggle for freedom from settler-colonialism

Syria. Artsakh. We have seen this before. And because these people don't matter to the world, the world watched as it happened. This doesn't end here with Palestine. The world has become far more unsafe for all of us.
In the coming collapse decades, "Bad stuff is about to happen, you should just leave" is going to be government policy in a lot of places

Words fail here. The least of our moral duty is to make experience of Gazans and Palestinians visible in the barrage of narrative hypocrisy that constantly and continuously dehumanises and erases them and their humanity. The narrative enabling & justifying the genocide being advocated for.
