in the summer of 2020 I wrote a song called "Murderers and Mourners" and it feels relevant now again and you can listen to it here if you want:

Love this 2026 energy LFGOOOOOOOOO!
GOOD MORNING FROM THE TRAIN!! 2026 is incredibly young yet and full of possibility! What are you going to DO!! Iโ€™m joining the board of my local park this year and Iโ€™m going to learn to sew a dress! Iโ€™m going to learn Spanish and see if I can do a back bend! The magic is in the Going To Stuff! LFG!

And also talk about things other than Bluesky / ATProto. I'm guilty of too much nerdy myself but trying!

I'm 9 pages into @benchansfield.bsky.social's Born Into Flames and already mesmerized by the storytelling. Who knew a book about property insurance could be so captivating!

PS All hail @littlefreelibrary.bsky.social, which brought this gem to my hands.

Great post highlighting how modern OSS licensing misses the mark on the time-tested principles of Elinor Ostrom's Governing the Commons โ€” to our peril.
Anti-fascistic software is made possible by pro-labor licensing.

I've been trying to write this piece for years. Every time I get started I'm just overwhelmed with paralyzing visions of the FOSS commentariat accusing me of WrongThink.

But I'm tired and we urgently need to get our shit together.
Open Source Power
We have to talk about open source licensing.

Also learned about barbershop culture from this one. www.awesomefoundation.org/en/projects/...

Tbh a lot of applications for basics at public schools make me mad, because teachers shouldn't have to apply for library budgets or trash cans or school gardens. Investing in kids is table stakes.

Oh awesome! Where are you living these days?

The one I can't get out of my head might be this portrait series. I rarely vote for solo artists, but his craft and subjects were both incredible. www.awesomefoundation.org/en/projects/...

For me this feels geographically far but spiritually close to my work building online communities with Cypherpunk Retreat, @ipfs.tech, and more.

Different contexts, same underlying work: building trust through focused action.

Awesome Foundation, @awesomefoundation.org, with hundreds of chapters worldwide, is a great way to discover and support awesome grassroots projects (we're seeking a couple new trustees in the Philadelphia chapter, if you want to join).

He said something that stuck with me: win or lose, these moments clarify our next steps.

I've been thinking about that a lot. When national institutions feel shaky, I find hope in building durable community institutions โ€” local *and* global. A few projects that have been inspiring me lately:

Last month I was at an event with @nikilsaval.bsky.social, a PA state senator on the front lines of building progressive power. This was right after Nov's election successes โ€” but also right after a big budget defeat where PA refused to fund transit and withdrew from a regional climate initiative.
