Happy Holidays, everyone! 🎄
I didn't have time to paint a new winter themed art, so here is the one from last year.

Happy Winter Solstice everyone.
One of my first oil paintings from 1996 of Avebury where I went to primary school. Being there had a profound influence on my work.
Lighter days ahead.

Today seems like a good day to remind folks that we do not use AI in any part of our workflow!

The difference between a concept artist and an illustrator is that they *conceptualize*, - they are thinkers with illustration skills, ideation is exactly the part we don’t want to replace.

I'm so, so tired of non artist people telling us AI is a valid tool like any other and explaining the creative process to us

the full quote is even worse
If I had known the two paragraphs about genAI in my article today would be so controversial, I would have expanded them a bit! Here's a rough transcript of the relevant portion of my interview with Swen Vincke, so everyone has all the context. (Full article here: www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...)

i would rather not make anything ever again than use generative ai for writing a first draft or generating ideas or whatever. i would rather die basically

“We just use AI to generate ideas for our concept art”

Yes, you're just using a plagiarism machine that spits out a mishmash of creativity and ideas from thousands of creative people who didn't consent to their work being used in this way. And you're using this as the foundation for your game. 💀

And what really burns is that they STILL want the prestige of human art. That’s why they hide AI use. That’s why Sandfall didn’t disclose i until they were caught t. That’s why awards shows don’t want rules. They want the aura of craft without the cost of respecting the people who do it.

I dunno anymore, man. I guess everyone is fucking suspect now until they aren't.

we have to press studios to expressly label their shit as non-AI, like, I don't know what other choice we have, because it isn't the norm anymore

It's all bad of course, but it is the most c-suite brained thing to think of it as "just" concept art because it doesn't appear in the final product.

Concept art is the creative bedrock of your entire project. If you're comfortable using it there, the entire thing is rotten.

The most difficult thing to explain to non-creatives is...the part of the job we DON'T LIKE is the part that makes money. The marketing, the business meetings, the packing, the platform research, the book keeping, and phone calls. We want to keep the operation running so we can work on more art.
