From Flock cameras to fusion centers, “free” surveillance equipment funded by tech vendors, federal grants, and private donors locks cities into recurring costs and long-term data‑sharing, including with ICE. The end result is an erosion of our civil liberties. www.eff.org/deeplinks/2...
“Free” Surveillance Tech Still Comes at a High and Dangerous Cost
Surveillance technology vendors, federal agencies, and wealthy private donors have long helped provide local law enforcement “free” access to surveillance equipment that bypasses local oversight. The

Turning Point USA is allegedly "purging" staffers, after Candace Owens's crazy theories about TPUSA's involvement in Charlie Kirk's murder started to catch on with their own employees.

Her nutty theories about the killing of Charlie Kirk have won over some of his organization’s employees.

Gambling, in particular on-line gambling, is the new scourge the rich have unleashed on the not-so-rich in an attempt to funnel money from the have-a-bits to have way too much.

There was a very good reason for restricting gambling and that is that people are irresponsible and easily duped.

"Surveys have found that nineteen percent of 18-to-24-year-olds qualify as problem gamblers, and thirty-seven percent of Gen Z gamblers self-report as having an addiction. A 2025 Siena poll found that forty-eight percent of all men aged 18-49 have an active online sports betting account."

Super real line of inquiry and writing, but also one of those tough ones because it intersect with your life in a really unique way. The cultures built around drug use of any kind are really interesting to me because they mimic so many more traditional cultures and traditions

The gamblification (can't think of a better word) of everything is disturbing. My feed has been flooded with Gamestop Power packs and people dumping thousands to tens of thousands of dollars gambling on Pokemon cards.

One of the most astonishing examples of sociocultural conditioning of substance use/misuse is the increase, & then drop, in USA smoking rates over the last 100 years and the sociocultural changes in public, private, & infrastructural life involved.

True story:

My MA Anthropology thesis was on drinking stories (osf.io/46sfd/files/...).

Intoxicated behavior, & patterns (& frequencies) of use/‘misuse of alcohol (& other things) are immensely socio-culturally conditioned.

This is creating misuse & addiction w/attendant devastation for profit.

The chart at the very top doesn't come from the report but from me: it shows that the bogus argument that sickness absence had already been increasing before the pandemic, is false.
But it's still used by minimizers to downplay pandemic effects.

That helps no one.

The effect size seems quite large to me, the temporal correlation with the pandemic timeline is also present and is consistent across demographic groups.
