every morning I wake up, read the news, walk down into hell, share a strong cup of tea with the devil who assures me it will and can get worse, walk backwards out of darkness, and emerge into the light to witness the world collapse

"Why is science fiction so bad at predicting the future, even as we continue to use science fiction terms to describe reality?"

Author @kyliu99.bsky.social tracks a brief history of human innovation and science fiction as myth-making:

"Turtles" as a group includes terrapins/tortoises, sea turtles, & freshwater turtles.

Cannot recommend this highly enough, and my added suggestion would be César Aira, who does perhaps have a fandom of sorts (Patti Smith, chairperson) but whose work really rewards substantive and ongoing engagement.
in 2026 instead of lore-diving whatever giant franchise benefits from your engagement try doing it with any writer/director with a substantial body of work but no “fandom”. Marie Ndiaye. Maryse Conde. Samuel Fuller. See where it gets you. If you gotta have a static setting do Mervyn Peake
