'A high-resolution digital map allows people to plan their routes along the ancient roads of the Roman Empire. Combining historical records with modern mapping techniques, researchers mapped hundreds of thousands of kilometres of roads. The findings nearly double the known length of Roman roads.'

Does anyone know of a collection or resource with examples of op-eds comparing the US to Ancient Rome? Good or bad. Actually bad ones would be even better. I’m trying to come up with a course assignment but having trouble finding these even though I know I’ve read plenty over the last few years.

Thinking about my dad on what would have been his 88th birthday. I don’t remember why exactly, but at some point when I was in 6th or 7th grade he pulled his old college text and showed me the Greek alphabet in an appendix. I promptly memorized it for no good reason. Guess my path was set early.

Love this project as I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about urban neighborhoods in ancient cities. It would be really interesting to dig into this data and figure out *why* people chose the boundaries they did. Structural boundaries (streets, landmarks)? Social/cultural knowledge?
The Dublin Inquirer Neighbourhood Mapping Project is an online tool allowing people to draw "their" idea of their Dublin neighbourhood's boundaries. In the 70 maps of Stoneybatter submitted, not a single one has come east of Constitution Hill!

For Blue Monday we can't think of anything more appropriate than this charming depiction of a man getting his face eaten off by a leopard.

I had the privilege of meeting Colin Renfrew many years ago while working on a BSA project at Phylakopi. Shamefully, while everyone hung on his every word at tea at the BSA, I fell asleep since I had just gotten off a transatlantic flight. Woke up to an empty room!
Colin Renfrew has passed away. A hugely influential figure in archaeology throughout the 20th and early 21st centuries.
Here are a few photos of him from about 15years ago, when I was working on his Keros Project.

Such a fascinating find, and presented with proper interpretation thanks to being found in a solid archaeological context. No conspiracy theories about Roman visitors to the Chesapeake here.
Some of my favorite artifacts from the SEAC tour of Jamestown. Starting off with the this wee 1st/2nd century Roman oil lamp.

New open access article out today. The result of a deep rabbit hole I went down after scratching my head at the mysterious “resolution” box in Gephi’s modularity function. Fairly technical, but maybe of interest to anyone thinking about how to define urban neighborhoods as networks.
