By way of proper intro: it is very nice to connect with all of you here. I’m a Brazilian PhD candidate working at an intersection between the seas of Translation Studies and Premodern Iberia, and some other promontories. I’m at UMass Amherst, advised by the excellent @albertlloret.bsky.social.

Flaws and glitches are minor concerns easily dismissed. Being “mid” is fine because someone can promise this will get less mid and plenty of people are willing to believe. GenAI isn’t mid. It’s linear algebraic sociopathy.

Remember, folks. We took one for the team. "affect recognition" is so bad it's beyond the realm of wrong and you might give yourself an ulcer having to debate it. SO WE MDE SURE YOU DON'T HAVE TO! Here's that link to our piece once again.

How Scientists Use and Abuse Portraiture
Many scientific studies assume that the features of painted faces are the facts of the flesh-and-blood countenances to which they refer. This assumption is not only false; it is preposterous.

How often can you say that you've seen a kantharos-rhyton? This cup has a bridled donkey head attachment, usually seen only on rhyta. It mirrors the donkey seen on the reverse of the cup, ridden by Dionysos. When you drank from this vessel, you looked like an ass! 🏺 1/

Can you imagine what our ancestors thought of these? Pure magic.
Something lovely for the weekend!

Magical amber animals from the Mesolithic. Carved between 10,000-7,000 years ago.

Amber can generate static electricity⚡️ For their ancient owners, these small animals could give off sparks in the dark and make hair stand on end, as if by magic✨

I’m quite sure I had deleted my academia.edu account a while ago, but I just received an email from them saying they had an AI-generated podcast of my paper. so my account was still there and I had to disable the AI function and delete my account again. nasty website.

I miss translating literature so much. last week I read a chapter from henry berlin’s “alone together” for @albertlloret.bsky.social’s class and couldn’t resist trying to translate the ausiàs march excerpts into portuguese.
here’s one example (lines 9-12) from poem XIII.

I wish ‘usufruct' was used in English as it (‘usufruto') is in Portuguese, that is, outside of legal lingo as well. it fits so well in certain contexts. it is a good counterpoint of usage and enjoyment, or at least benefit.
