The difference this year and last year has been stark. At the beginning of 2024, we considered buying a house bc we had finally saved up a house downpayment. We still don’t have a house bc my husband needed to quit his job for reasons, the industry crashed & he couldn’t get re-hired, & I lost my job
People argue and deny this because it's terrifying to accept that you are one random bad luck incident away from being dependent on a food pantry and applying for rent or mortgage assistance, and a couple of random bad luck incidents from losing absolutely everything. It's scary. It's also real.

WRITING TIP, something simple but it catches many of us out: if you have a great/fun idea for your story, *use it now*.
Don’t save your ideas for some nebulous other story you might write tomorrow. I promise you’ll have more.

The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.
