Plenty of people have ruined their lives making bad art, too, there just aren‘t as many biopics about them

Really? You wanna hacky-sack right now? With everything going on, you wanna stand in a sunny park and kick a little bag back and forth? Unbelievable.

Saw that Whit Stillman's METROPOLITAN was having a revival showing later this month here in Philly and thought, "Finally, a movie I could cosplay for"

Oh yeah I think I saw that same thing. Like there was one guy who basically had an entire story arc through both Trump admins, at this point

It's kind of amazing to me that none of those NY Times "we talked to eight conservatives in a truck stop bathroom" stories have turned out to be Jayson Blair-style inventions, because so many of them read like bad novel drafts

It’s honestly so great!

For the first time in my teaching career I am in a classroom with dimmable overhead lighting. Did I manifest this? Did Temple University see this post?
I think the hardest part about teaching is the harsh overhead lighting. Really unflattering.

This is surreal. 4 Oglala Lakota men kidnapped by ICE in Minneapolis have finally been located. One of them was released but the other 3 are being held at Fort Snelling, a former concentration camp used to imprison Native people incl. the Dakota 38 during Dakota Wars.

Seeing that Ken Bone is categorized by Wikipedia as a "personality" made me picture him, in a different era, as a divisive guest on Hollywood Squares.

Has anyone checked in on Ken Bone lately?

Thinking about the semester, early in my teaching career, when I decided to wear a tie every day, and my boss popped his head into my office to tell me he’d noticed how hard I’d been working

Have had far too many occasions of late, for various reasons and in various contexts, to contemplate the Iraq War-era claim, "They will greet us as liberators."

Just thought, "Maybe I should write something about that job," and then remembered I did, actually

The greatest lesson of that job--a perfectly fine writing/editing gig, a little boring, no one's dream or even interesting to talk about at parties--though of course I didn't realize it until much later, was seeing the different ways people process their disappointments

Thinking about the man I worked with my first college summer who seemed grumpy/vaguely annoyed all the time and when Jerry Garcia died he laughed and said “I guess all those Deadheads have to get jobs now.” Anyway that guy is almost certainly dead by now, I sincerely hope he found some joy

Went to the local starbucks and the barista drew a crude caricature of a college professor on my cup. Kinda looks like Indiana Jones? Actually that's pretty cool, now that I think about it. I should stop back in tomorrow, see about getting that kid his job back

Pains me to admit how much pleasure it gives me to click on the Wirecutter "best kitchen sponges" article and see that they're the kitchen sponges I already own and use in my kitchen

I've been conducting an informal study and I feel like this website gets most unhinged in late afternoon (when people could use a nap) and then kinda chills out again in the evenings (when people have a couple drinks or take an edible). Anyway, do with that information what you will.

Trying a new thing this semester on day one: Instead of introductions, going over syllabus, etc., I walk in, put on Guns n' Roses "Welcome to the Jungle" at ear-splitting volume, and when it's over pack up my things and walk out. Whoever shows up on day two is ready to learn.

This is the sort of statement that was expected from every university president and law firm partner over the last year. That those statements weren’t made played a huge part in where we are now and people will remember.
Jerome Powell: "This is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions—or whether instead monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation."
