As I wrote earlier, "The Land of Old did not have day or night. The sidhe had no use for it. Why would the stuff of dreams need sleep for themselves?"

The Land of Old not only has no day or night, it is better thought as timeless. The sidhe leave time to the nockers.

#SFFChat Q3: How is time kept or measured in your world? If time is the same way as for us, how does magic or technology influence it?
November 14, 2025 at 11:02 PM
It's vital. Whether you're sailing past the Everdusk, wandering the Cobbles during a lampblacked night, taking in the morning light of the Gossamer Court, or strolling through the Twilight Garden, time is place.

#SFFChat
#SFFChat Q2: When you write, do you tend to have a clear picture of the time of day for particularly intense scenes?

Oh, this gets interesting in the Land of Old.

I always miss these (You know, day job), which is why I like to take an extra moment for myself in the evening.

I'm Miguel Montevista, one-time writer of D&D adventures and SCP works, and most recently published the slipstream short story "@kittypooka".

Hell is a cope.

It's the hope that there's a place where only bad people suffer. Such a place can only be better than here, where anyone can suffer.
You're not a good person. You know that, right? Good people

DON'T END UP HERE

Whenever you find yourself asking, "Hey, what's that about?"

Look it up. Jump down the rabbit hole. You never know when knowing what Tír na nÓg means or Chinese dynasty naming conventions or protein folding or the extent of the Mojave Desert will come up useful again, or in combination.
I strongly recommend everyone do research sometimes 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘧𝘶𝘯.

Look something up on Wikipedia. Go to the little citation. Follow it. Read the article it's referencing. Follow links to the original interview. Read the paper written by the interviewee

It genuinely makes you appreciate journalism

How many people do we think is doing it? Or is it just a handful of people who stuff the channels with a hundred submissions each?
people need to stop spamming mags with ai slop
Due to the high number of AI submissions and general life things, we are still processing short story submissions from the last open submission period. If you haven't heard anything from us yet, this is why. We hope to have everything processed over the next 2 weeks. Thanks for your patience!

#SFFChat Q4: Share a scene from your work that's either creepy/horrifying or involves a character's fear!

Interpret however you like!
October 3, 2025 at 2:46 PM
He's a director, but John Carpenter has always managed to maximize dread out of a single moment, even when it's not horror.

Lewis Carroll also did the same, because his nonsense reminds people of the helplessness they actually have against the world around them.

#SFFChat
#SFFChat Q3: What SFF or speculative horror author do you think does creepy scenes esp. well? Maybe there's an author who you don't read because they scared you so much, or a fantasy writer whose prose raises the hair on your arms (because it's creepy, not because it's bad, ahaha).

"Infovore? Feel bad? Pentagram? Did you just call me the devil? Darling, no! What kind of a son calls their own mother the devil?! Oh, Rashaun, my lovely little boy! Do you know what you're doing to your mother?"

"You're not my mother."

"…Because I do."

#SFFChat Q2: Is there any spooky imagery you're especially fond of?
October 3, 2025 at 2:35 PM
Horror is integral to SFF, as it becomes filled with things we do not understand. There is horror in exploring the unknown, and it is important to embrace it.

Many of my SFF pieces have horror in them, whether it's a mannequin with image issues, or everyday phenomena that hide predators.

#SFFChat
#SFFChat Q1: What role does horror play in SFF? (or replace "horror" with fear, spookiness, or another similar thing!)
October 3, 2025 at 2:28 PM
Hello! I'm Miguel Montevista, writer of fantasy, sci-fi, and slipstream, and my greatest fear is the inevitable loss of self-control that comes with aging.

When mind and body can no longer do what is needed, or expected of others.

#SFFChat Intro: Introduce yourself and share a fear you have! Could be a traditional fear such as a phobia, or maybe it's a writing-related fear.

This is an incredible example of how we tend to see what we want to see, evidence to the contrary. Evren's concern for the literal hole, Gabrielle's desire for romance, and Beckett's clinical opinion, ignoring everything else. I can see you really do have a lot of fun writing them!

The tension being generated here is amusing. It's playful, almost campy, how the MC, her uterus, and Roxy spar for attention (or respite). I can practically feel her menstrual cramps, despite not being explicitly called out in this particular piece.

Ok, Here’s a snippet from #TheDamsel that I like for a number of reasons but also because it’s one of the scenes that jumped out at me when I thought of the book #SFFChat
September 12, 2025 at 11:06 PM
It's sometimes hard to tell everything that's going on in a single snippet. It mentions the Black Rider, but doesn't say who it is. The Black Rider appeared earlier in the story, in a recurring dream he has had, where the Four Horsemen arise to terrorize everyone via covid.

#SFFChat
#SFFChat Q3: Read your snippet over again. Is there anything else that stands out to you about the passage? (e.g. a strength it showcases, maybe it's both setting the scene & conveying character, maybe you see room for improvement, etc).

OR

How would the scene read from a different POV? 1/2
September 12, 2025 at 10:54 PM
I shared that scene from "@kittypooka" because it gets into the feelings many of us went through during lockdown, whether self-imposed or enforced. It also shows how Pedro's emotional state is tied into his situation, where frustration and lust and desperation for connection combine.

#SFFChat
#SFFChat Q2: What made you choose this particular snippet? What is it doing?

OR, if you already answered that, share what you remember about your process writing the scene (thoughts that you had about it, intentions, maybe the fact that you *didn't* think but wrote intuitively, etc).
September 12, 2025 at 10:52 PM
Here's a snippet from a published work, "@kittypooka." During the pandemic, Pedro meets a nihilist e-girl online.

Hello! I'm Miguel Montevista, writer of slipstream, sci-fi, fantasy, pretty much anything with a fantastical element.

I've been told that I'm skilled with descriptions and metaphor, building edifices of allegory and sensation that let the reader experience everything in a scene!

No time for half-measures. He took a vial off his bandolier. “I can offer this in exchange.” The vial’s contents sparkled rosily in the light, with a slight syrupy sheen.

Mallincorder was instantly fixated. He imagined its sweaty, fruity smell. “Is that Love? That’s Love, isn’t it?”

"I'm here about the Covenant. You know the Covenant?"

Of course he knew the Covenant. All nockers knew the Covenant. Every waking moment reminded him of the Covenant.

But if anything, he knew even more keenly that you never interrupt the sidhe.
