As first light lit a light blanket of fine cloud, I was expecting a grey dawn. It is grey now, but (again) there was a moment of Sydney glory as the sun pushed through a gap in the cloud just as it hit the horizon.

This is a really powerful photograph. Sydney dock worker Jack Franklin+Kiwi Bert Bryan, members of the International Brigades, fighting somewhere in the terrible heat of the Ebro battle, the overexposed light glaring in the summer of 1938. Discovery of photo here

One of the great moments in antifascist cinema history. Casablanca (1940). Patrons at Rick's Café drown out the Nazis marching song “Die Wacht am Rhein.” with a rousing “La Marseillaise”.
A scene in spirit for January 2026. (whatever the complexities of that French anthem today)

On a serious note, why should Gianni Infantino get away with this?

How can his position not be under the utmost scrutiny? What mechanism is there for him to be removed after his pathetic display of obsequiousness is shown to be the outright sham we all knew it to be?

Football deserves better.
I woke up to see the news. I am aghast.

I can't believe the FIFA peace prize has been disrespected like this. Is nothing sacred anymore?

The SMH continues its bizarre obsession with private schools, providing a large article on the outgoing head of SCEGGS. Fine, but the SMH doesn’t carry articles by the heads of government schools, like Hornsby and Normanhurst, which perform better than the privates.

Congratulations to the South Coast Writers Centre for the successful delivery of the True Stories festival.

I enjoyed being part of it and particularly enjoyed hearing from Dennis Glover during the session on fascism. Thanks to Siobhan McHugh for her astute facilitation of the discussion.
