Sydney's Garden Island, originally named Bayinguwa by local Aboriginal people, was established in 1788 as a food source for the First Fleet's crew. It evolved from a colonial kitchen garden into a fortified naval base in the 1800s, finally joining the mainland in 1942.

I’m at the eastern side of a walkway/cycleway bridge that links Woolloomooloo to the Art Gallery of NSW. While the ”Loo” is still sleeping, a relieving cooler breeze after a sticky night graces a Sydney dawn. These light clouds will give way to showers latter.

Life is hectic, Sydney is really hectic at the moment, but solace can be found. At dawn this morning, I found it at the Bronte Beach Ocean Pool. The dippers liked it too.

Maroubra is derived from an Aboriginal word, a Dharuk word, meaning “like thunder” or “place of thunder”. This phrase specifically describes the sound of the heavy, crashing surf pounding against the coastline.
At dawn on a warm Sydney day, the sea is calm.

Looking down a small pier at Sydney’s Darling Harbour, the city lights dance the dance of abstraction.

The Sydney suburb of Zetland was named in the 1870s by New South Wales Governor Sir Hercules Robinson to honour his friend Thomas Dundas, the 2nd Earl of Zetland.
On a drizzly pre dawn, I ponder the odd name of Zetland and appreciate the cool effect of being damp after a sticky night.

I’m sad to say that we are at the back end of summer, and the sun is already late to the morning. So there was no sky action when I was out early, but the lure of city lights dancing on the inky depths of Sydney Harbour made my pulse quicken.

This paddler must know the Sydney Harbour Ferry routes to be out solo at sunrise. If you visit, look up a kayak tour company for this kind of action. An acquaintance once hit a bull shark with his paddle.🦈

These are three of the ten or so terrace houses that make up Edgely Street in Sydney’s Surry Hills. The odd thing is there isn’t an actual street. Its frontage is a park, and the road next to the park is Nickson Street. It’s a cute spot.

The noir delights that Clifton Reserve delivers every night (early morning for me) is available to all if they dare to venture into her darkness. It connects to Crown Street in Sydney’s Surry Hills.

I tried to take a pic of the temperature drop and the windy conditions, but failed. At the northern tip of Sydney’s Darlinghurst, my realisation came to me from my vantage point of Wisdom Lane.

Bushfire smoke haze from the fires north of Sydney mixed with light cloud and a dawn glow give an eerie effect above Victoria Park at the southern end of the CBD.

I’m perched on the pier at Darling Harbour looking towards the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It’s is warm at dawn ahead of another hot day. Off to the right, Barad-dûr casts its evil eye across the city.

Sydney’s Darling Harbour sparkles as a warm dawn unfolds into a hot day.

As first light lit a light blanket of fine cloud, I was expecting a grey dawn. It is grey now, but (again) there was a moment of Sydney glory as the sun pushed through a gap in the cloud just as it hit the horizon.

I got a very brief flash of pink and purple as dawn warmed up at Rushcutters Bay ahead of another hot Sydney summers day.

I see a little silhouette.

Adelaide Place is a bit spooky, and sits in a quiet part of Surry Hills. The odd brutalist beacon at the end is the old Readers Digest Sydney office.

If you walk, drive or cycle up Mrs Macquarie’s Road early in the morning, and keep very quiet, there’s a clearing in the trees where you can spot Sydney City slumbering in the summer warmth.

I love gum nut flowers, I feel the white one are rare. The red ones seem most prevalent but my favourite is the brilliant orange ones. What’s your favourite?

This Sydney Terrace is on Bourke Street at Telopea Street. What caught my eye was the play of dawn light, street lights and the shadows they create. Urban scenes are very mnemonic for me as they take me back to my late teens when I moved from a dull suburb to the city.
January 21, 2026 at 9:34 PM
It’s not the Sydney Harbour Bridge that caught my eye, nor the Opera House, not even glorious the summer dawn, but it was the curve of the wake behind the harbour ferry as it heads east.

Federation Way is a pedestrian and cycle path that links Anzac Parade to Centennial Park. Often busy, and Sydneysiders are early risers, but this morning, I got there first.
