My warmest congratulations to Mark Carney.

Voters in Canada have elected a Liberal government on a mandate to combat Trump's dangerous populism. Across the globe, it is liberals who are taking the lead in standing up for prosperity, security and democracy in the face of Trump, Putin and the rest.

Liberal leader John Turner in 1988: “I believe that Canadians are not going to vote for Brian Mulroney, a man would be governor of a 51st state. They are going to vote for John Turner, a man who wants to be Prime Minister of Canada“.

A federal election is imminent, which will be dominated by concerns about the Canadian relationship with the United States. I’m certain the Liberals will return to their roots and embrace nationalism, while painting the conservatives as pro-American. Just like in 1988.

Fukuyama’s pining for past ideological struggles suggests that the Last Man would eventually get bored with technocracy, consumerism, and the stultifying constraints of middle management—and seek new monsters to fight.

If we’re going to be forced to relive the 1930s can we at least have a US president who doesn’t terrorize my country? Hell, I’d even take a reincarnated Richard Nixon

Canada had to deal with American annexationist bluster and threats back in the 19th century, but had the British Empire’s protection (in theory). Who would now come to Canada’s aid in the remote but not impossible chance that the US turns fascist/imperialist?

17-year-long Scottish study of 82,000+ adults finds commuting by bike reduces your risk of:
• early death
• hospitalisation for any reason
• cardiovascular disease
• cancer mortality
• treatment for mental health problems.

Yeah, but those LTNs and bike lanes are *really* annoying.
