I sometimes think about how from the late 90s until the early 2010s a bunch of video games were set in "modern day" New York City. Since then, the rate of NYC games has gone way down, but now and then you get your Spiderman or a dystopian-FPS set in Manhattan.

katamari thoughts

katamari damacy (ps2): part of a class of games where even though i may like a later game more as a game, the original entry is such a clean and confident execution on a vision and vibe that i just consider it perfect. seminal work in the field of video games

we love katamari (ps2): the best one. plays better, way more variety in levels and objectives. soundtrack isn't as good as the first game but still quite good. very cool example of a team making an unexpected hit and then being able to go wild

me & my katamari (psp): the lack of analog sticks isn't this game's problem, you can adjust to the controls pretty quick, the problem is the levels. they're all max 5 minutes long and have one size increase, but they still want to present the illusion of you starting small and getting big so they just start stapling levels together that you have to beat in sequence. there's one environment for each size and they try to get around it by randomly pulling different times of day/seasons for them that have different object layouts, but there isn't nearly enough. i played the same snowy new years level like a dozen times, and i mean a dozen times because this game goes on forever. it took me as much time to beat as the big compilation game for the ps3. soundtrack is mostly stuff from the first two games but the few original tracks they made are nice

beautiful katamari (xbox 360): this one shocked me to go back to. it's an actual scam. like i remembered it being a super early example of people getting mad at on-disc dlc, but i didn't remember it was because it was actually literally no hyperbole so they could sell you the other half of the game. there's barely any game here without the dlc. i finished it in half the time of katamari 1 and they charged twice as much money for this one. then another $20 for the other half of the levels. it's nuts it's such a baldfaced ripoff. what little is there is fine, the final level is really cool, but it's also very straightforward, there…
